I feel like to put it in the beginning would make it less emotional, yes, but the way it is in the final game is too rushed. You are not given enough time to process what just happened in the barn, to breathe out, as you're immediately thrown into the flashback.

I like it where it is honestly because it made me think a bit of the whole "life flashing before your eyes" bit that people say happen when you die. I thought it was Clem thinking back on finding AJ before she passed on.
It might have been better later so you could have some time to process Clem being gone as you mention but I don't really know what they could have put in it's place. Certainly not the AJ fishing part where he ends up finding her hat and seeing walker!Tenn.

I feel like it would be enough to extend the moment of silence after the barn (like you had solid 5 seconds or so of black screen and silence when Lee died in S1) or put some other sort of padding between this and the ranch. As it stands, I felt like I was thrown into different scenes and moods without properly "feeling" them, if that makes sense. You see the barn scene, you start to process it, but wait, here's the flashback; flashback is over, you feel sad to see Clem and AJ's reunion but you don't have time to let it wash over you as you immediately start playing as AJ.
I don't know, maybe it works better for other folks and I still like it, I just think it could've been more restrained or slow.

Do what I did, replay the previous seasons to either experience the good moments again (even in S2 and 3) or to see some other choices and scenes. When I finished the final season again I legit teared up, which didn't happen the first time I played. Still, I was finally able to get over it not entirely though, when I occasionally remember that it's over during the day I get bummed out.

Hard to say. It wouldn't be a problem for me personally (Clementine didn't exist until season 1, so maybe they could write some new characters that we'd love just the same - they already did it with AJ desu), but I read a lot of people's posts being upset at ANF when we played as Javi instead of Clem, so eh, who knows. I think people would give a new game the benefit of the doubt just because it's the Walking Dead, but some of them will surely drop it because no Clem.

The ending seemed to imply she'll be fine. The school is very hard to find (it was in bumfuck nowhere even before the zombies) so no random passers-by, Clem still has her knee so a simple wooden foot would be enough for walking around (probably no running, but still), a caravan mentioned in the end implies a possibility of proper trade routes etc. If they don't let their guard down, they can maintain their nice lil Outer Heaven.
Clem and AJ are Done Running, so they'll make it their home no matter what, and that is as much of a happy ending as TWD characters can get.

I remember reading something about that too back in the day, but realistically, what can you even do in that situation if you plan to bring the same characters back to a new story other than converge them back into one plot anyway? I see the only other option as a Witcher 2 kind of approach, that is to make several games' worth of content for the outcomes of different decisions (and even then W2 had only two different paths).

Anyway, I think their "the story is tailored by how you play" approach works best when it concerns smaller stuff like character relationships, appearance changes etc. It's easier to make due to their smaller budgets and is more rewarding since these little things don't need to adhere to the general plot like many other "big" choices do and thus don't need to be ignored or changed because the story needs to go a certain way. It feels more like your tailored story when you see AJ wearing the shirt that you gave him, Clem having the scars that were the outcome of your actions etc.
