You shouldn't read anything but the short story collections Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.

While I read all the books just to really appreciate the events in the games and give them context, I cannot say the books were good. If you're willing to suffer through them just for the sake of having background, which I personally felt was worth it but I cannot recommend anybody else do. They were insufferable in English regardless if the writing was shit or the translation was shit.

The significant take-aways are this:
- Geralt invoked the Law of Surprise, which bound him to Ciri even though when he made the invocation Ciri wasn't even born yet
- This means that Ciri and Geralt would cross paths a lot as they were bound by "destiny"; Geralt would save Ciri many times when she was a kid just by coincidence of being in the right place at the right time; coincidentally Yen and Triss also develop a parent-like bond to Ciri
- Eventually Ciri gets into some real shit as her home is invaded by Nilfgaard
- Ciri goes through like 4 fucking books avoiding rape and dangers. Just presume that it's a miracle we get a chirpy Ciri we see in Witcher 3 and not some jaded edgelord.
- Ciri is the last bearer of the Elder Blood, which imparts to her god-like magical power. This is why everyone, notably Avallac'h, wants to decide who has sex with her and so they can control her children. This is why after a huge battle and Yen and Geralt are too exhausted to do otherwise, Triss insists Ciri is delivered to the Lodge so they can marry Ciri off.

Seriously don't read the books. It's a shitty generic fantasy romp.

But then you may have to consider she hasn't been given the opportunity to mature. For the most part her behavior in W3 being like a kid seems about right because even at the moment they skullfucked Vilgrefortz she was still a kid and even with the passage of time she was still being fed that destiny shit by Avallac'h. I felt like her immature interactions with Geralt in W3 seemed appropriate and she turned out as sassy as Avallac'h was.

I don't think we needed THAT moment in the game where Ciri breaks down and starts blubbering about how hard her childhood was. I'm happy to accept that she's buried a lot of that stuff in the meanwhile and there's just too much reason to be happy when you've been reunited with Geralt, Yen, and Triss in less than 30 minutes of real-time.

Yes, it would have been nice to have a long segment of Yen, Geralt, and Ciri sitting at a table being a family and Ciri getting some emotional baggage off her chest but unfortunately they had to save the fucking world.

Everything after that is a bit hit or miss as its one long ongoing story that goes book to book. There is great stuff in there but remember about 30%-40% is dedicated towards Ciri as the PoV character and not Geralt. My favorite bit in the entire book series is when Geralt forms this makeshift fellowship to go find Ciri on a months long expedition. The books provide a massive amount of context on the games and the third game and how you play it is decided by how much of the games you know vs how much of the books you read.

There are some missable/failable side quests, but they don't matter
