The original Bubble Bobble had some weird stuff in it like the ominous secret rooms with hidden messages in the glyphs, the invincible skeleton monster that beelined towards you if you took too long in a stage, the fact you could actually fail in saving your girlfriends and they vanish forever if you did the ending wrong. It's just been a constant in the series.

Extremely simple and addictive. Plus evidently Taito/Square weren't as diligent in stomping out copycats like The Tetris Company does to high profile Tetris clones. What's baffling is nobody ever cloned Panel de Pon, especially since Nintendo killed the series with the tepid DS iteration.
