How is that a nonsense title? Bravely default is meant as a positive message (being yourself despite outside coercion) that ties into some of the themes on the story, while also being a play on words in regards to the games central battle mechanic. It's pretty great title, actually

The Star Graal is a massive tower-like machine designed to control the environment (e.g. making it hotter, directing wind, etc.). Someone mispurposed it and used it to turn people into shades called Shadow Giants.
