Two main things keep the game from being amazing though
1) The first 10 levels / the start for each character are basically the same formula, just in different locations. It gets exhausting.
3) Too little overlap in the story and proper dialogue between the party

This was because of Neptunia and Danganronpa. Both of those games had a number one on the games sells chart and made a ton of money off of it were it has become viable for Japanese companies to not have to worry about exclusivity all the time. There are certainly flaws in the method, but there's no such thing as a perfect story. Structure of storytelling is just as important to the author as content.

The character you mentioned also reminds me how much I hate that the rest of the party disappears into the void for every cutscene.
I knew from the start that there was no way to handle 8 separate stories with 8 characters the moment they announced what they are going for but it still annoys me they didn't even try.
The game feels like an incomplete proof of concept stretched out very thin.
Also fuck the job system. I almost dropped the game when I realized that there are literally no more skills to unlock after you're done with the first batch and that there is virtually no reason to ever switch jobs once you've found perfect combinations.

well, the final superboss requires 2 well kitted and organized parties. the planets align 200k damage strats don't work against it

and ask yourself. would sitting there and getting Golden Sun style reactions to every event from your 3 present party members really change anything? The solo storytelling aspect is required for the 'pick your party' thing it had. if each character had lines for every event in the game, and those lines change based on who's present, well, thats a lot of dialogue most players would never see.

a suspension of disbelief is required, imho, to enjoy video games properly. I can sit here and pick apart any medium with the same lines of thinking. but I can appreciate the technical aspects required to reach the goal they set for themselves, and I feel they did a good job structurally, as their gameplay goals and storytelling goals had to be arranged in a certain way in order to work.

but by making characters interact and thus influence each individual story, you'd have to take away the freedom of party building. or have an absurd amount of branches if X, Y and Z character are with you, if just X Y, YZ, XZ, but on a scale of 7 different characters. Simple math will tell you thats just not feasible
