I was completely obsessed with the comic for a good 2-3 years. It was at a point in my life when I was at my most depressed and there were times when reading and talking about homestuck was the only reason I got out of bed. I have never felt the same level of emotional investment in a group of fictional characters before or since. As much of a loser it makes me, my life revolved around homestuck.

Even I dropped the comic partway into Act 6 and never even bothered to finish it. That's how fucking terrible it became.

Characters I loved suddenly changed personalities completely. Characters got killed off left and right only to be immediately be brought back in some new contrived way. Characters got introduced only to be dropped instantly with no development or impact on the story at all. The writing was constantly plagued with trashy teen relationship drama that the comic had managed to sidestep or only subtly hint at for years. The influence of tumblr and the rise of the social justice movement became more and more apparent in the writing and especially in the fanbase. The way flash animation, music and interactive scenes were used changed dramatically, from frequent minor usage to only ever being used for huge and cumbersome end-of-act montages. The comic lost its tone of fun and adventure, only flipping between either serious drama or hyper-ironic farce. The pace of updates, one of the most fun parts of the comic, was cut drastically, being at best maybe about 1/5th the rate in the early days, with frequent hiatuses. New plot threads were constantly being introduced without any resolution or even progress on existing ones. Even the author clearly had no idea where anything was going.

Eventually I just couldn't take it anymore and stopped reading. Never even found out how it ended.

I loved the premise up to the point the trolls where introduced. I don't know what Act I ended up dropping it at but I think it was along the dad troll introduction. It had just become an incredibly twited and impossible to follow story at that point.
You had to read through paragraphs of chatlogs where each line was a goddamn riddle to even understand what was going on, and the only thing the fanbase cared about was romance and shippings. I simply couldn't follow anymore and I hated everything about the trolls which were now even more centric than the main characters.

It's not "up in the air" and there are no "ghost-writing concerns". It's LITERALLY partially ghost written and we've known this since the moment the epilogue dropped. We know who the ghost writers are and approximately how much they each contributed. There's nothing more to speculate about.

I didn't like Act 6 even when it started. I was already disenfranchised by Act 5-2 which had plenty of bullshit by itself. I barely remember it now but I didn't find any of the alpha kids likeable. I just wanted to get back to the original kids who are supposed to be the protagonists of the entire story, but then when it did finally get around to them, amazingly they were all ruined by personality/writing changes.

Reminder if you haven't read homestuck past Act 4, you haven't missed much and you can actually do something more productive with the saved lifetime.

I mean, I personally loved Act 6. My favorite flash was Collide. But I understand why people don't like it. I just really love the whole thing.
I think something that helps is if you read it as it was coming out vs. reading it from beginning to end. I never read it until it ended. Perhaps that is why I don't get the hate for late Homestuck? I find that archive readers tend to enjoy late Homestuck more than others do.

Well, we all have our preferences. My intial thoughts on the Alphas was that I didn't like them as much as the Betas, but that's precisely why I was interested in seeing how they fuck up. Same as with the Trolls. Only the trolls did get fucked up, but the Alphas didn't, and then a bunch of Trolls got revived anyway. And the Betas got rewritten to be more awful in the same way that Trolls and the Alphas are.
