That's the point, they're intentionally manipulative and games are being designed with systems and progression specifically tailored to licit those responses from certain kinds of customers. Let's say you're running on a hamster wheel, and by doing so you earn credits or items or whatever. None of those credits or items earned from running on the wheel will make it any faster or easier to run on, but you're still running on a fucking hamster wheel, you're on a treadmill that grants shining things to people who have problems with being addicted to collecting and showcasing shiny things.

Even by playing without spending anything, you're part of the product and environment the game is trying to create to attract whale customers. If there's no one playing the game, they have no one to show of their shiny things to and no one with other shiny things for them to fawn over.
