Is this really what people consider to be the best of the best? I mean, the games there are mostly pretty good but if someone showed me those games as being their favorite picks, it's pretty much the most vanilla answers you can give.

Literally any amount of exploration or divergence goes a long way. Don't just play the most popular games and circlejerk them forever, play stuff you haven't heard of and find some gems. It's like saying you love music when all you listen to is top 40 stuff, or saying your favorite movies are star wars and marvel films.

I'm not saying popular is bad, but I'm admittedly sad when someone's taste is that entry-level and they consider themselves an avid hobbyist

Tetris is the most famous game. Pong was well known by enthusiasts, but never gained enough popularity to bring gaming mainstream. PAC Man was in a similar vein, in that it fucking swept arcades across countries, but never really left the arcade scene.

Mario is the most famous video game character. While Mario's games are famous, the two most famous games, Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros., aren't individually as famous or well known as Tetris

Pokemon is the most famous video game franchise. I legitimately don't know how some fucker is going to argue this, considering they're the 3rd most profitable franchise on game sales alone, and Pokemon's merchandise sales dwarf (by magnitudes) any other video game franchise's, but one of you fuckers is going to breathe too hard through your mouth and start arguing it
