I ask this because they are the only critically acclaimed single player games i've never played

probably that they are movie games

I like them a lot. They get compared to DMC and NG a lot, and in that light the combat in God of War isn't all that special. But I think it's a misleading comparison to make: the God of War games (especially the first one) are a lot more focused on broader action-adventure stuff. There's more platforming, a lot more puzzle-solving, and also a lot more spectacle. They aren't Prince of Persia or anything, but their overall priorities are different from DMC no matter how much they borrow from it.

Also, Ghost of Sparta is great and worth playing if you enjoy the other games. It's one of my favorites. I'm not a big fan of God of War 4 but there's worse out there.

literally the same mechanically
i stopped playing the 2 in like 30 minutes when i realised this, just really fucking boring games desu, same with the new one, a load of shit

1 has an unironically good story as far greek tragedies go
2 is fun and has peak level design

GoW 1 has a neat story but the combat gets old fast.
2's story wasn't as good but the combat feels a bit better and the pacing is better.

I played 1 a couple of months ago for the first time. The most interesting thing about it is as said, that its story is a new, pretty straight Greek tragedy. Otherwise its very much just a basic action adventure game with dmc-lite combat. Pacing is pretty awful IMO, particularly the lack of boss fights.

I only played a little of 2 before stopping. It didn't feel much improved from the first, but maybe I'm wrong and should finish it. Though I might have stabbed myself in the foot on that one, because I started 3 recently.

4 was by a long way the best in the series. Best game I've played in years.

The whole trilogy is amazing. How they managed to fuck up nugow is beyond me

They're great games. Play on Hard.

>4 was by a long way the best in the series
I like parts of it but I found it pretty boring.

GoW3 is trash. GoW4 brought the series back on track.

Casuals liked it when they came out and now through nostalgia people think they're great games when they were just decent.

It was a slower game definitely but i thought the story and world was much more captivating. I loved the setting.

The gameplay was also much tighter and harder, the valkryie fights struck me like a soulsborne game more than god of war.

the PSP games were the best

Terrible opinion.

I got to around halfway point of 1 and just dropped it bored to tears. It has a cool backdrop and interesting levels but the combat feels really weird and unsatisfying.

a focus more on scripted moments and experiences rather than combat
the combat is more brainless and is more meant to have satisfying feeling of ripping apart your enemies

nuGoW is bad and the originals could be considered mediocre, but their flaws aren't as pervasive as NuGoW

1 is pretty basic but fun for a play-through. 2 is the best in the series not counting nuGoW which is at the top alongside it. Not surprising considering it's the same director

>flailing wet noodles - the game

>non bamham combat feels "weird and unsatisfying"

we've reached the singularity where, without kewl animationz, zoomers just aren't interested. Imagine having to press the stick in the direction of your attack manually by yourself.

This. Until 4 the combat was always a bit impactless, you just mashed and it would work 99.9% of the time. That's okay but meant by 3 it had worn a bit.

>Imagine having to press the stick in the direction of your attack manually by yourself
oh user, do you like nuGoW because that would be ironic

so this is what nu-Yea Forums looks like

4 had great gameplay. Genuinely struggled with the valkryie fights more than isshin.

Being slower isn't the issue. I like plenty of more methodical games, even action games. I just didn't care for how it incorporated contemporary trends. The old games did a lot of cribbing too, but they stole from games I actually like. A lot of what 4 borrows makes it worse, not better.
>gameplay was also much tighter and harder
I don't think so. I hate its auto-glide, I don't care for how it lazily bandaids the limited field of view with the threat indicator, the RPG system is largely redundant, and there's a lot of deadweight in the form of "climbing" and walky-talky blandness. It's nice that the game is willing to be demanding on harder difficulties, but the older games were too.

I didn't really care for the story either. At least not enough to excuse how much time it spends on it. I thought the callbacks to the older games were tasteful and well-executed, though. The first Athena vision was a pleasant surprise that legitimately caught me off guard.

did you watch the MM video, if you haven't you should

The world either appeals or doesn't. I'm Scottish so much of it looked like where i live which i really enjoyed.

With regards to gameplay the fov increases when using the chains and i never found it troublesome with the axe. I can't really remember the climbing and the walking/talking only bothered me once when you have to hold the boar and saunter through the witch's area.

no I'm talking about the irony of "Imagine having to press the stick in the direction of your attack manually by yourself" specifically

Are you implying that GoW is some sort of benchmark for good combat?

Both great games
