Is this true? What type of games are fun when you lose?

In a lot of roguelikes, the ways that you lose can sometimes be so convoluted and strange that they become comical and memorable.
For example, one time I encountered a "Nurse" enemy in Nethack that had the special property of increasing your max HP if you stripped naked and let them attack you. So, I got naked, but then a green slime appeared, which touched me and started turning me into slime. Thinking quickly, I zapped myself with a wand of fire to burn off the slime, but I was nearly dead and surrounded by zombies, so I panicked and tried to pray to God to heal my HP, but unfortunately I was currently visiting Hell, so instead the evil god blocked my prayer and disintegrated me. Personally I found this a pretty fun way to lose. Other times in nethack I've lost from getting put to sleep by a monster and then having my brain eaten, or by catching on fire and having potions boil and explode on me. So many weird things can happen.
A classic example of a game that's fun to lose is Dwarf Fortress. Once you establish a fortress, if you end up losing it's pretty much a sure thing that something crazy and unpredictable happened.

All of them!

All games. It depends on you, not the game.

Fighting Games. Unfortunately most of them just call me a faggot scrub and dip after two games.

Mario party.

There is no such game in existence. But Ninja Gaiden is fun once you've lost a billion times and mastered the movesets in the process allowing you to finally cakewalk every area (incendiary ninjas aside). None of that would be nearly as enjoyable if you hadn't suffered prior.

The same with Siege. Unless you get lucky, you lose most games until you start to comprehend how vital the destructible walls are and when/when not to hold kill zones. None of that would be nearly as enjoyable if you hadn't suffered prior.

I'd like to say the same about Sekiro, but the inputs in the game have way too many odd delays, so it often feels too random to be satisfying.

If you can identify what you did wrong so you can correct it next time, like in fighting games, it's so weird that it becomes funny, or if you can get a good story out of it. Those are all the situations where losing can be fun

CIV, played against friends, anytime I feel the fight was fair or even. Actually GSG games in general, SimCity, Kerbal, games I play to fuck around in, I'm not playing to win.

Yes, when it's a close game and you're having fun, it doesn't matter whether you win or lose.
Of course, when some D-boy, scientist, or fucking guard shoots you out of nowhere or you get griefed, you want to rain holy justice upon that scum.

fighting games if you're not a scrub

Fighting games

Fun games.

Fighting games are by far the most rage inducing genre when you lose.

Losing isn't fun but unless you're such a thin skinned faggot you accept it. I play fighting games, when I start a new game I'll lose hundreds of matches, sometimes consistently. You just accept it.

Team Fortress 2 because it never really mattered if you won or lossed. Just the crazy gunplay was what made it addicting.

>there’s no such game
WRONG
The three anons already named a few where losing is fun

Retro / arena deathmatch games. When you die you just respawn immediately and have a chance to get revenge.

It's not that losing is fun. It's that losing doesn't negate the fun you had up to that point. When a game is good, it *feels* good to play. so even if you lose, at least you got to experience the sensation of playing the game.

How can one be so close minded? Half the fun in dwarf fortress is losing in ridiculous over the top ways. In porn games losing is fun because it unlocks sex scenes. In some competitive games losing can be fun if the game was fun. Losing a close game vs a great team is more fun than winning a boring game against a bad team.
In TF2 it doesn’t matter if you win or lose.
In games played with friends losing can be fun a lot of times.
Et cetera

*team-based shooters

It's one of the defining features of roguelikes imo, along side permadeath
Losing is fun when the beginning of the game is fun
And no that doesn't imply the middle or end of the game aren't fun

No, you’re not quite right. In some games losing is fun in its own right. Dwarf fortress is the prime example. In general these games tend to be sandboxes. Kerbal space program is another one

I don't mind losing in fighting games if I feel like I learned something from it, or improved me in some way.

Mobas

if you get mad when you lose, then you have already lost before the match started.

Losing can be fun. Like in hitman when your plan fucks up and you have improvise

well, with souls and games like that, the fun is actually overcoming adversity and seeing a tangible progression in your own skill over time.

and there's Kenshi, where when you get your shit kicked in, it isnt game over, and the experience of the fight helps you get better. i like the way thats handled, at least, but its still a bitch to get your shit slapped

halo zombies can be fun sometimes

never heard of that game bro what console it on

Fighting games. There's always something to take away and learn.

I generally have a good time in Overwatch, win or lose. Also any roguelike.

it isn't really fun but it's a mechanic you see in every h-game to come out in the last 5+ years

that might just be your tv/monitor

It wasn’t very fun losing it though. It was awkward as fuck

the ones where you lose because you understand the mechanics of a fight and the only reason you lost is because you need to get better.

You're just playing the shallowest portion of h-games and conplaining that it appeals to the lowest common denominator which is you.

Strip poker.

name one h-game to come out recently where you're not forced to lose to see a single anime titty

I only saw a relevant game in Dwarf Fortress. The rest are debatable. MQ is more a book than a game.
No, the inputs are just not very responsive when compared to similar games. I enjoy the difficulty of enemies, but the controls are bad. I'm not a Souls fan so I'm not going to make excuses for bad controls like RE fans do for tank controls.

Cursed Futana Ring, to collect sex CGs you have to go out of your way to capture vital targets on the field.

This, fighting games are pretty fun to lose at especially if you're playing with a friend who's much better than you and he's explaining to you what you're doing wrong over voicechat as you play. Every loss teaches you something and makes you a better player, until sooner or later you get to the proud as fuck point where you can more or less hold your own ground against them.

Underrated

Games where a big tiddy spider girl wraps you up in a cocoon when you lose.

i guess in games where you play as a girl and get fucked once you lose.

The moment just after a game you've lost is over isn't necessarily fun, but the PROCESS of losing is fun since you haven't actually lost yet and are trying to win a challenging game.

Similarly, having won a game feels good, but it isn't "fun" since at that point the game is over. Playing the game is what's fun. However, unlike losing, if you're winning, it's not challenging and therefore isn't as fun.

Losing is more fun than winning.

a multiplayer game where you are vsing someone equal skill level, the match is going back and forth and you only lose because the other players pulls off something incredibly risky and skillful that leaves you with nothing but admiration that you were a worthy challenge to this guy.

This. Depends on the game but in DF it's certainly fun to lose.

At the end of every Titanfall match there is a segment where Respawning is disabled, and the Losing team must try to make their way to an Evacuation vehicle without dying. You get bonus EXP if you evacuate successfully. The winning team must try to kill the losing team, or destroy their Evacuation vehicle. They don't get any extra points for this, but they do deny those points to the other team if they manage to kill them or destroy it.

It makes losing still have a skill-based element where you can "succeed" in a way.

the games that you dont care about

Any game that allows you to get back into the action quickly.
See: Hotline Miami, Super Meat Boy, Ys game boss battles.

This is something I really enjoy in a game, because it allows you to turn the tables and get a last laugh.
If you won but everyone on your team was wiped, you still won. If you lose, you can shit on the enemy winning team and escape or not - it's enjoyable when the enemy team wins when they're at low HP, and you hunt them down indivdually before evacuating.

Games where I see little reason are ones that allow you to hurt each other but not kill. MGO3 does this where each game lets you just kinda wander around and still melee each other, but there's not much point to doing any of that - dicking around is more fun.

I came to post this. It was so fun yet nerve wracking when you got to the evacuation zone early and were hunted down by pilots and titans

you learn more when you lose, but this only matters if you actually wanna get better at that game me you're playing.

God I wish that were me...

Not true. you learn by doing it right too. I’m not saying you shouldn’t use the opportunity to learn when you lose but you don’t have to lose to learn. In Nioh for example I learned about blocking by winning against the centipede boss, not by losing to him

Losing is not fun, if you ever enjoy losing you're a fucking loser
that said if you get mad pissed at losing some casual ass games you're also a fuckhead. If you cry during a grand final of some big tournament it's understandable, but if you ever throw controllers or smash keyboards after losing at the safety of your home, kys
