That's easy - it's a cherrypicked slow ass enemy that is not representative of the majority of tyhe fights you will get into. Automatas long i-frames are due to the long attack strings some enemies have, plus the fact that the majority of the time you are going to be attacking multiple enemies that don't BANHAM you by standing around attacking one at a time. Combine that shit with the previously mentioned long combos and having a dodge with a low amount of i-frames that wasn't spammable would result in you being hit constantly.

Also play on hard for fucks sake.

Nier's combat is less engaging than even a fucking souls game, don't kid yourself. Platinum's budget titles like Korra have more challenge in them than this.

Just use self-destruct. It doesn't actually one shot you, it just blows off 2B's dress and leaves her in a critical state which you can easily heal from using the right chips

people seem to hate on i-frames and I understand why and all but i-frames are almost necessary
while a game based around dodges that are purely about the movement and getting out of the way of the attack could be interesting, it would require very accurate hitboxes, and if you get stuck in a corner or something blocks your dodge you're fucked
a dedicated dodge button with i-frames usually means you can dodge everything using only one defensive option except in DMC and similar games it's not easy to do so
on top of that it opens up new options in terms of what you want to do after the dodge
on the other hand it is a problem with Souls games because every boss is just a dodge and punish encounter and the only thing they do to push the difficulty is make the startup of attacks delayed so the enemies and bosses feint and make you dodge so they can catch you for rolling at the wrong time
sekiro was a step in the right direction in terms of combat, since you can no longer dodge everything, but Souls used to never be about it's combat, and if Souls was to try and be an action game it'd likely be for the worse
either way I avoid talking about this stuff because there's an unusual amount of autistic hate for DMC calling it a button masher
while I don't think every action game should try to be DMC, it is undeniably one of the deepest in terms of it's combat. even saying that will get some autist screeching saying they it's just a button mashing game for weebs then go on to say nuGoW has deep combat

It's nothing like revengeance. Nier is an ARPG series to begin with, not a straight action series like DMC or MGR. If I have to compare it to an action game, it's more like Bayonetta. You even get equipment that gives you Bayonetta's "witch time" called Overclock.

You can mash dodge, turn off the screen, and be rendered completely invincible the entire time. That's the sign of a bad dodge mechanic.

And funny enough, people who *actually* actually played the game would know that it's not a cherry picked webm. This works against bosses like Eve and A2, and it works against giant mobs of enemies.
