It made no pretense of being a "military academy", the aesthetic and tech of the place matched the rest of Liberl, and the play section section fit the spirit of the times with its medieval knight theme and hokey pipe organ background music. Not to mention it was part of a much larger and more nuanced chapter of the game.

He gets captured by the gnomes after the Courageous is blown up, loses an arm, and becomes a temporary drone that's partially mind controlled by the mask he's wearing. You see him in maybe two scenes before you break the mask and he comes back to the good team. That's all there is to it.

I too, finished Cold Steel 1 recently, and since I'm waiting for the 2nd one to come out on PS4 next month, I thought I could give Trails in the Sky FC a try.
Does the game ever pick up? I keep hearing that the first game mainly serves as ''world building'' but surely the game picks up at some point no?

It really only picks up at the very end as a cliffhanger to SC. If you pick it up, it's for the characters and not the plot, which happens in SC.

Sky is slow as shit, both gameplay & plot.
FC never really picks up though, shit started to happen in the near end & SC onwards.

I liked the setting that CS had, and the places and people it introduced. So far, I quite like the characters and Liberl is pretty comfy, but I'm just itching for something to actually happen.
I also liked the combat/customization better in Cold steel, but that's to be expected since FC came out almost 10 years before.

No one dies in Trails anymore, didn't you know? Trails has at most 5 important character deaths in it as a whole, and 3 of those deaths happen in Sky.

FC picks up much more quickly than CS does; things start going into gear near the end of chapter 2, instead of having to wait for the epilogue.

The combat/customization in CS is just a strict downgrade from SC/3rd and especially Zero/Ao which just straight up had more mechanics.
