I'm considering purchasing this game but afaik it's pure roguelike. Is there any constant progression in it or is every single run a completely self contained one?
Does anything carry over between runs?

The sole progression is unlocking new items to appear in the run and characters to use. There is a form of currency that is used to buy meme tier items that you do keep and build up from runs, but each run is purely self contained aside from that.

People can't really handle opinions opposite to theirs and mix that with anonymity and it's just asking for people to shit on you. That's really all I can say on the matter so why don't you go spend your time doing something you enjoy rather than trying to discuss something practically no one is going to agree with you on.

I don't understand it either, but I liked RoR1. RoR2 was ruined by 3D, it might have been better if there was headshot damage or something that incentivized aiming , but theres no aiming skill involved since you just aim for center mass for max damage. God it would have been so much better if it was just 2D with added features and slightly better pixel shit graphics.

I haven't been let down by a game like this in decades, and the positivity its getting just blows my mind.

Also it kills me when people say git gud when this game doesn't even require good aiming, at least RoR1 you had to know your enemies so you could gauge if you could roll through them without being clapped to death.

The transition to 3D was probably the best current example how to make a 2D game into 3D without damaging the foundation. Notice when most games from 2D to 3D, the lose and shed to much off, or it gets lost in the process. It happens to any game that has done this. But it's how much you keep the core design. It's extremely hard thing to do I understand you might not like it in terms of that you feel 2D is better. But to say it ruined it is borderline retarded.

And I'll bite. The reason ROR2 is so good is because it's a really satisfying gameplay loop with no tacked on bullshit. No story, no tutorials, just raw gameplay with none of the filler. The game is challenging regardless of your skill level because of the neverending scaling difficulty, and unlocks will keep you hooked if you're looking for a bigger challenge.

I like the first one because it was simple and side scrolling.

And idk about satisfying gameplay loop. maybe its just my luck but i got the same items 2-3 times on my first couple runs which makes the game feel pretty same-y. And it isn't really challenging from a gameplay point of view. I couldn't imagine someone being really bad/good at it. its just kind of point and click. and there are enough enemies and they are big enough where accuracy isn't all that important

Tried it but I was terrible bored of it. In the end I just refunded it. The basic gameplay loop got old really fast for me. I don't know why but I keep trying new roguelites and they keep disappointing me. I should just stick with roguelikes.

Quite a lot. A Roguelite is basically any kind of game with (usually) some very shallow/rudimentary RNG intended to give it some form of "endless" replay value. Roguelikefags like me usually go for the Berlin Interpretation for what a Roguelike is.

One good thing to note is that Roguelites tend to have a more focused game design whereas Roguelikes rely on tons of different systems.

Infra Arcana is a free Lovecraftian Roguelike that I like a lot.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is one of the most popular ones. It's not that great if you're really into RLs, but it is a very good place to start as a new player. Also free.
Caves of Qud is one of my favorites. It's like Gamma World, if you know what that is. If not then pic related. It's on Steam. You can mind control creatures to become your slave and then mutate them to have more arms so you can give them more weapons. What else do you really need from a video game?

Roguelikes are a niche subgenre of RPG. The whole point is that rogue was unique enough from all other kinds of RPG that the few games that are truly similar it need to be grouped together for those who enjoy the genre. Nobody who plays DoomRL will ever call rogue legacy a roguelike.
