Nigga they wouldn't of made Rex a Mii costume outfit if they were going to include him in the Fighter Pass. If a character is made a Mii Fighter outfit before being made playable, chances are they're not gonna be playable in that installment. See: K. Rool and Inklings in Smash 4.

Also, the fact that our first two known Fighter Pass characters (Joker and "Brave", presumably a DQ rep) are two characters that don't have a notable presence in the base game anywhere is not a good sign for anyone that's a spirit.

There was a discussion on the DK Vine podcast about some internal information that was leaked from Nintendo a few month ago - apparently they were completely blindsided by the characters popularity, and while the character was considered 'retired' before, they're looking to bring him back going forward. Retro had asked to use the character in some capacity in Tropical Freeze Switch, but this wasn't approved as Nintendo wanted his relaunch to be in Smash.
