I definitely self-insert when I play games with character creators, as I get immersed in video games when I play, and see the character I control as an extension of myself, as my only tool to canonically interact with the game world.
If you're not sure where you stand on this scale, ask yourself: If you were playing SMB and a normie family member walked up and asked "How do you do that?", would you say "When I press A, I jump", or would you say "When I press A, Mario jumps"?
Whether it's a self-insert or the odd times I try to RP a particular character in mind, I always try to keep my characters lore-friendly and fit with the artstyle of the game world. The list, cut as required by game restrictions, as follows:
