Obsidian is the most incompetent developer in video games.
>re-wrote Alpha Protocol after already recording all the voice work and had to do it all again
>spent $500,000 on one setpiece, then cut it from the game
>managed to make a buggier Fallout game than Bethesda, even though it was a glorified mod with little work involved
>new game looks and plays like 2006 shovelware with Reddit humor and worse animations than Andromeda
>fuck up every single game they make and then cry and blame it on the publisher
Obsidian is the most incompetent developer in video games
ok?
Before Obsidian the incompetent but ambitious studio was Troika.
Their incompetence outweighed their ambition and they went out of business.
Obsidian hired the leaders of Troika to lead The Outer Worlds.
There is no possible way this ends well for Obsidian.
It's amazing to me that Yea Forums calls Alpha Protocol a great game. It's a complete piece of shit. Even the people that made it think it's a piece of shit and its clusterfuck production at the hands of Chris Parker is the main reason both Brian Mitsoda and Chris Avellone left Obsidian.
They’re a Microsoft studio now, they’re going to be around forever until Microsoft decides to dissolve them

Troika actually made unique and ambitious RPGs. Obsidian, when given the chance to make original IPs, made a generic modern military cover shooter and the most generic medieval fantasy RPG ever.
all forgivable if only they werent unironic fucking cuckolds
>they always waste time and money, and make buggy games! Obsidian are hacks!
>make clear their new game is less ambitious from the get-go
>why are they making lower budget games? Obsidian are hacks!
>less ambitious
its fucking nothing no features no effort fucking dumpster fire
So 5-6 years then?
>why are they making lower budget games? Obsidian are hacks!
It's lower budget than AAA games sure, but then why the hell does it look worse than even AA games? Heck, it looks worse than games Obsidian themselves made a fucking decade ago.
Shame they never bothered to finish the unique and ambitious RPGs before they released them.
Fact: New Vegas is better than everything naughty dog has done in their entire existence.
Don't reply.
Alpha Protocol was such a fucking underrated game.
that's true
spiritual sequel never ever
Obsidian posts on Yea Forums, they have to, otherwise no one would even care.
Well, those "leaders of Troika" only created one of the best roleplaying games to date, so there's that. I think the story of the game is in good hands, the rest though... we'll have to wait and see.
The one on the left is from ingame, the one on the right is a cgi trailer made just to advertise The Outer Worlds, of course it doesn’t have fancy lighting effects or the real model
>>fuck up every single game they make and then cry and blame it on the publisher
How do they keep getting away with it?
People love an underdog
Each attempt Obsidian makes to create their own universe rather than simply deconstruct a setting made by others, has been more disastrous than the last. Aside from the outdated gameplay and lifeless cities, Pillars of Eternity's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of combat mechanics, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Sawyer vetoed the idea of making anything at all innovative or original; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable nostalgia pandering to ageing Baldur's Gate fans. Pillars of Eternity might be anti-casual(or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Divinity series in its refusal of spontaneity, fun and excitement.
>a-at least the writing was good though
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the narrative was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time I engaged in dialogue with an NPC the game presented me with a Wiki-page style infodump instead of anything resembling actual human conversation.
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time this was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Sawyer's mind is so governed by obsession with pointless minutiae of the lore that he has no other style of writing.
Later I read a lavish, loving review of Pillars of Eternity by the same David Gaider. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kiddies are playing Obsidian games at 17 or 18, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Dragon Age II." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Pillars of Eternity" you are, in fact, trained to shill for Bioware.

>managed to make a buggier Fallout game than Bethesda, even though it was a glorified mod with little work involved
I don't think you've ever played Fallout 3 on release if you think it was less buggy than New Vegas.
Putting Fallout 3 into New Vegas through the mod is less buggy than playing it standalone, and that's despite New Vegas being put together in 18 months.
>>spent $500,000 on one setpiece, then cut it from the game
what
FONV at launch was all but unplayable.
>That wasn't Obsidians fault
It never is.
>FONV at launch was all but unplayable.
Please tell me how. Only consoleshitters had an "unplayable" game and that was simply less framerate due to more enemies.
Its mediocre at best.
Has some cool concepts, but as always the game was poorly constructed.
Yes only the largest segment of the market had issues.
No big deal.
Poor Obsidian. They only had a year and a half to write some new quests and model some new characters while literally everything else was already done for them (to the point where you or I could have made New Vegas in the GECK) and lazily reused. However did they manage?
>>managed to make a buggier Fallout game than Bethesda, even though it was a glorified mod with little work involved
This always confuses me. It seems to happen with a lot of games. Like
>developer makes game with engine
>some other developer is hired to make a sequel/spinoff/whatever heavily based on the first game because first dev is busy or whatever
>they fuck it up even when they were basing their work on a functional game and didn't do much more than swap out assets for new ones
Like how the fuck does it happen. Most recently it was Rising Storm 2 that was a fucking buggy mess. It also happened with a bunch of Call of Duty games in the past. I dropped the entire franchise after I made the mistake of buying Black Ops 1 and it was unplayable with shitty performance and constant crashing even when it was literally the same engine that Modern Warfare 2 was made with. The fucking shitpile ran better when you COPIED OVER some files from the MW2 folder. Like how the fuck does that happen.
Depends. Josh Sawyer decided to come back and stay at Obsidian because of the Microsoft deal and going up and talking to MS. Cain and Boyarsky said they are likely going to stay after TOW ships because and one of the biggest parts of the MS deal is that Feargus doesn't have to do finances any more so he can't make idiot decisions. They might actually be in a better state with someone to actually guide them instead of constantly fighting publishers
