so, why's he in super robot wars?
So, why's he in super robot wars?
He captains one of the most powerful starships in anime ever.
His great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was literally a Nazi and he's of the same bloodline, he spends the entirety of his show (named after himself, what a badass) doing nothing but BTFO'ing refugees and backhanding women. He also plays his panflute in his captains quarters with a mouthless alcoholic alien girl who mains the HARP
Does that answer your question?
Why not? Albator makes anything instantly cooler
Based and dare i say redpilled.
I watched arcadia of my youth and loved it, what's next? i'm reading the original manga run and then gonna read the dimensional voyage currently, should i just go and watch the original series too? what's the best stuff
>I watched arcadia of my youth and loved it, what's next?
The original Space Pirate Captain Harlock.
Arcadia of my Youth is a "sequel" to it or an "alternative" version, but it's very hazy. The original is the true spirit of Harlock in that he's essentially alone as a major player against all others, it's a very strange melancholic feel, like all of Harlocks friends and the big battles they had were years ago and they're all dead now and only Harlock is left and then suddenly one of the biggest conflicts in all anime sneaks up on Earth and Harlock is suddenly the lone defender against a force of incomprehensible magnitude.
Apart from that you want to watch Galaxy Express 999 so you can enjoy Maetel, you can also take a dive over to Space Battleship Yamato as that has ties to Harlock/999 too, although tenuous.
Woah, that's exactly what i wanted when i started getting into it, should i watch Yamato before the original? or just jump right into the original, because i've been meaning to get into yamato too
Man Matsumoto and continuity do NOT like playing along.
Each Harlock work isn't exactly a sequel of the other and at most, SSX is kind of a sequel to Arcadia of My Youth.
Sadly the original Harlock anime has aged POORLY and I say that as a fan.
Either is fine, Yamato and Harlock have vastly different atmospheres to them. One is Humanity trying to overcome insurmountable odds against an alien empire, the other is mysterious invaders from the stars arriving at Earth and slowly but surely making the mistake of rousing Harlock from a kinda depression/languid nature when he's the embodiment of the best of Humanity.
It's worth pointing out that the Arcadia in the movie and the original TV series are vastly different, the original TV series Arcadia is practically invincible.
>Sadly the original Harlock anime has aged POORLY and I say that as a fan.
I disagree. Animation wise it has aged badly but the direction is of the highest quality, you'll see this in parts where they just let the Arcadia drift through the stars as Mime and Harlock play some tunes, I can't quite put it into words but there's a real sense of the vastness of space and just how isolated the crew of the Arcadia is from everything else and how they can just take their time.
I'm watching harlock right after coming off of getter robo, where its basically the same thing with each adaptation being similar, but not like, direct sequels. Honestly i dont mind it
Harlock is sincerely the coolest protagonist Japanese media has ever given us.
