Is merc any fun for anyone out there? It seems like he is so dependent on items or other people in your party having range that he just isn't very fun. Played him 3 times only made it to the 2nd stage.
He has a really slow start, but once he get's the right items he's a ton of fun.

Merc is very fun, though I do wish his right click had more range, and that his abilities weren't affected so much by goat hooves
Give him more of a try. I struggle generally with this game but I find Merc to be consistently strong in the early game compared to the other characters.

R into Shift. Shift lets you shift again every time you dash through an enemy with it. That will get you some much needed altitude. You can typically R into shift and stand right on top of the vagrants head. Then the only thing he can hit you with is his nuke at the end (not a huge concern early game). This feels really cheesy to do so I just R into shift shift shift M2 then R again as it should be coming off cooldown

Same strategy really except you can't stand on top of them. R into shift shift shift M2 rinse repeat (should be holding down M1 at all times during these processes). I either completely obliterate the wisps with shifts or I have to go through a couple cycles. Sometimes they bug out and fall to the ground which is kinda funny
Commando is garbage and has nothing going for him compared to literally any other character. There's nothing he can do someone else can't do it better or more fun, and even what he can do is extremely underwhelming. He's the only character you can consistently lose the DPS race with early in the game while others will always have damage or synergies no matter what.

Commando's lategame strength feels a reward for the absolutely shit early game. He's only second to huntress in sucking to play early game. Really all the characters save engie and merc suck early game. Early game just sucks in general. I wish there was a mode to jump into Loop 2 with a randomized set of items.

It's super trivial in multiplayer. Like everything else, Mountain Shrines are a part of the random spawn pool when starting a level. Since multiplayer massively increases the points available, there's vastly higher chances of multiple Mountain Shrines appearing.
I believe some people here have reported 4+ Mountain Shrine attempts in single stages.

Blue portal for reds, each lava map has a guaranteed gold chest aswell so looping lots will do that too.

Yes, but we're talking 140+ minutes into the run, if you're not using CE it will be long after the point where overloading worms take several minutes to kill and instantly kill you on contact

Once I'm feeling more confident I'll probably move R and F to M4 and M5, the side mouse buttons where my thumb is.

Get the legendary chest in the hell biome, there's a guaranteed spawn in a cave on the ground level. At higher levels money becomes a joke so you can go get it every time effortlessly, first few times takes a bit of grinding.

probably not. artificer already has the burn shit niche covered. also gasoline is a thing so just have banditos get gas and will o wisps to combo with this ability. at least then it would be useful, and with a high damage direct hit being almost a sure kill, it would set off gasoline and will o wisps reliably.

Get them close, time your abilities and keeps yourself on the air. The more you stay up there, the highers the worms will jump (and thus, making staying on the air easier).
As long as you don't touch the ground the worms will barely do any damage and inc ase you have to fall down you can do so further from them.
Merc is fun BUT I'd wait for fire affix fix before actually playing him a lot. Fire enemies right now is pure bullshit with him.

sweet spot seems pretty lenient from my testing so I doubt it's what you're looking for
I could maybe make another falloff model myself & put it in the game and add the calculations for it, but then likely it'd be incompatible with v1.4 builds of the mod

also no offense to the other user, but I think small damage large radius is a bad idea. MUL-T already has that covered for the most part with his stun grenades. High single target damage with smaller secondary blast damage is the way to go IMO

I think he meant the size of the targeting circle that shows up when MUL-T uses his ability. It's a rather sizable radius. Something a bit smaller than that would be good for his blast radius

It should be a longer range than that for sure. I should be able to keep a reasonable distance from bosses when I fire it, maybe you might need to get a little closer than normal, but not super close like MUL-T needs to be.

Neurotoxin could be changed a bit to cover more ground, but would overall work just fine.

The only one that doesn't translate well into 3D is Caustic Sludge, and you could honestly fix that by either making the sludge trail a bit wider or making it a general AoE that he leaves behind him. Even then, if you have to completely scrap Caustic Sludge and try something else, that's only 1/4 skills that doesn't really work.

Currently if it's within a sixth of the radius (this is pretty fucking direct), it will deal about 2/3 of the M2 shot and 2.4x as much as an M1 shot.
Outside that "direct hit" radius, it will linearly scale, so from about 5/12th of that damage to 0

The direct hits should be stupid strong but somewhat hard to get, rewarding skill based play and learning how the attack works to optimize your shots and make them count. A well aimed shot should kill a hefty enemy like a golem in one attack. again shifting to the synergy with gasoline and wisps, I want to be able to confidently kill an enemy and proc both items with this attack.
the cool-down for this attack should be somewhat long to compensate.

Wake of the vultures + trasendence is a great combo against fire dot and ice slowdown, 8 seconds of invulnerability to them is great. Everything late game is elemental anyhow so it'll always be up.
Ignore legendary chests on the first loop, takes too long to get them.
Other than that I've had equal success rushing TP or looting everything but the near vicinity of the TP first. Do whichever you find more comfortable I guess.
Does anyone else feel like the game is way less skill based than 1? In 1 you could dodge almost everything if you knew how and a run with bad items was much easier to salvage. Here if you don't get x items (syringes, uke, glasses, stickies) playing on monsoon is just an exercise in tedium. I can't tell if this is because the item pool is so much smaller or because so many more items are just straight up worthless in 2.
I was curious and went back to try 1 the other day and had multiple monsoon runs with mediocre item drops that I was able to complete and had fun doing so. I wouldn't even mind 2 being so much more item dependent if you didn't have to eat so much borderline unavoidable shot at base move speed.

You just stand on the vagrant and use the i-frames on R to dodge the big blast, you never have to leave until he's dead
3D space requires a different skill set than 2D sidescrolling. 3D space is a lot more about not getting surrounded and being able to save yourself. In Risk of Rain 1, there were a bunch of trivial ways to do this like ropes, iframes, and jumping loops. Risk of Rain 2 doesn't let you get away with that shit.
There's also the fact the main goal for Risk of Rain 2 currently is be able to beat 7 stages as that's the closest thing to beating the game currently. Going by that alone it's relatively easy to complete even on Monsoon. Risk of Rain 1's pacing is similar. In fact, it's possible to do no item Monsoon runs depending on character if your goal is just to beat Providence.
Risk of Rain's 2 major problem currently is that there are no skillful solutions for blazing enemies besides long range and killing quickly. Risk of Rain 1 doesn't have such a similar hard stopper as you could get Godlike invincibility as well where Risk of Rain 2 has shit for defensive items.
Rather than say Risk of Rain 2 is less skill based, Risk of Rain 1 is just super cheesable.

It shoots its bullets out faster but it still shoots the same amount of bullets and has the same cooldown. If you picked up nothing but attack speed, it would not appreciably increase the damage you do if you only used supressing fire.

I mean it does scale with his actual attack speed but there comes a point where you've increased your attack speed so much that 6 shots won't allow you to spread the stun effect to more than a single target which makes it dramatically fall behind later in the game aside from being marginally higher damage.

Why did the make the music so shitty this time?
Part of the problem is that an expanding sphere is the least processor-intensive way to indicate that an AoE needs line of sight. If you wanted to go with expanding rays it'd demand a lot more calculations to do properly, it's like casting shadows in every single direction.
Adding an additional indicator when line-of-sight isn't broken would work, though.

1 has no exploring compared to 2. You always see where chests are and the teleporter is, clear as day. There's no downtime. If you know the stage layout you can check out all spots and not miss a single item. Also when you teleport, there's no dificulty jumping.
To me, risk of rain is about getting items and wrecking shit. Playing Where's Waldo is completely unneccesary and doesn't contribute to the atmosphere. I hope artifacts make ror2 less painful regarding item accumulation and the excessive tracking. In 1 you needed no movement itema and you could dodge homings rockets. And you had ropes instead of """cover""". I hope the game fixes all the gimmicks it has, I stopped playing it and went back to 1.

again I wish, turns out I can't do fun stuff with prefabs because of how shit works. If you edit the prefab or a "copy" of the prefab, every instantiated object using that prefab will have those changes. This means if I use the prefab for clayboss' projectile as bandit & make it burn enemies on hit, it would make the boss do this too.
As far as I understand, the only way to get around this would be to instantiate a copy of the prefab somewhere, edit that and then use that as bandit, but then there's a fucking projectile somewhere in the world

nah, especially early game there are too few chests and enemies spawn too slowly to clear out the level. Grab an item or 2 then go for the tele. If there's a big grouping of chests nearby or an item you know for sure you need then you can grab it after the boss, if not keep going.
rule of thumb is you want to move on to level 2 by around the minute mark, and level 3 by the 10 minute mark.

that's almost the exact opposite strategy everyone uses
the main one that's commonly done is loot 1-2 items, pop tele, then loot as much as you can afford after killing the boss
the other strategy is to just rush the teleporter then buy after, and this one is generally used later in runs when the tele event gives enough to just buy the whole map outright
the only time that people bother to farm before using the teleporter is if someone is desperate for items, or if it's on map 4 and people want the guaranteed reds.
if you're spending 20-30 minutes in game before even hitting the third level then you're going way too slow.
There just need to be loading screen tooltips that say "when the vagrant is low on health he's about to do a giant explosion! Take cover behind something to avoid it!" so that people don't need to go online to complain about the move in order to learn how to avoid it.

the game needs some kind of tip screen in general, since a lot of people didn't notice the teleporter particle effects at first either
a tutorial level that takes place inside one of the ships before landing on the planet would be pretty comfy, and it'd make sense if the lore is that we're returning to the planet. the survivors should be better prepared

Unless you are going back and forth for very far apart items looting levels provides the best item/minute, which directly translates to power/minute and overcoming the games challenges.
Conversely, activating the teleporter is actively negative. You cannot get items while it's charging and it boosts the difficulty.
If you're interested in surviving a long time, which is currently the only goal in the game because there's nothing to speedrun, then not mostly looting levels is hindering you.
