You can't good gameplay with bad graphics/aesthetics. On a basic level if a game has unclear graphics you can't play it properly, on a more abstract no one would play DMC or Guilty Gear if ther character were black squares.

I only care about aesthetics because I don't play video games.

Unironically gameplay, but aesthetics (in part) give you the context and narrative motivation to keep going. It's not a versus thing. Both are necessary.

The environments should tell the story in its own ways. Resident Evil classics were a very good example of simple story and story telling with the environments helping. Project Zero/Fatal Frame does it perfectly too. The games also have great aesthetic and Fatal Frame having nice stories.

The player actually playing the game has to always be priority.

Aesthetcs are EXTREMELY underrated when it comes to a game's enjoyment. Total War Attila, despite playing like Rome 2 does but better in every way, has the worst aesthetics in the franchise, and thus Rome 2 is still better to look at when you're playing, and that matters enough to make me replay Rome 2 over Attila any day.

However there is a limit, DmC had a better aesthetic than its predecessors, but that alone could not carry the heavy weight of disappointment that game brought in its gameplay.

The biggest example of why aesthetics matter is Team Fortress 2. I dare you to listen to the developer commentaries and not feel pain.
