I kind of agree, it just makes me feel like a brainlet if I just enjoy the game instead of memorizing perfect full-stage chains
The real secret to shmups is to just release yourself from scoring autism and just play the game in whatever way you enjoy and have fun
I learn little teeny chain bits I figure out myself and work at beating my personal bests, but looking up and memorizing chain routes just isn't fun to me

You would have to be a madman to enjoy chaining in the original DDP, but the sequels give you hyper which makes it a lot easier and allows more room to experiment so it's more fun.

You mean DOJ BL? From my knowledge, that's the hardest and most competitive one currently, whereas SDOJ has a busted scoring system so only a handful of japs play it. The original DDP had a new hi-score in 2018 I think but it's not that popular currently. DFK is supposed to be an excellent game but I don't know much of it. They're sequels/spinoffs, kinda interchangeable.

Hmm, actually checked, and there's still no ROM. That means you can either play the PCB which has the scoring bug I mentioned that kind of kills it, or you can play the 360 version which has some neat extras but some issues with input lag. Sucks, but with lots of luck we maybe could get an M2 port in the future. This does explain why its fanbase is so tiny.

I played Mushihimesama recently. I more or less enjoyed it, but it didn't really "spark" with me. It lacks something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Then again I play for 1cc and not scoring so maybe the interest in that game comes more from scoring.

I imported the ps4 Versions of Ketsui and Garegga recently. Have come farther than in the Saturn and ps3 versions, still no 1cc though.

I love shmups and hard games in general but holy fug do I suck bad at them. How bad, you ask? In the last decade I have only gotten to level 3 of Contra 4 twice, and was only good enough to beat the first level without taking damage. I have never beaten any Contra, R-Type, Raiden, Thunder Force, Galaga, Gradius, Space Invaders or even fucking Sigma Star Saga. I only ever got to the floating space ship throught the city in R-Type Final. You name the shooter, I suck at it. You wanna know what boomer game I beat? Fucking Dig Dug. I played it so much the game shit itself. That's it. I wish I was better at shmups.

Shmups that expect you to use the stick are downright unplayable with keyboard, because those games don't simulate ship's intertia and rather rely on continuity of stick controls to imitate said inertia.
