I never liked vanilla 02, 2002 UM is much better. Either way I prefer '98 and I have a soft spot for '96 despite its several flaws.

Benimaru and Kim have been top tier in more games than K', Vice and Yashiro have. In fact Kim almost single handedly ruined XIII. Shitters will complain about Karate and Iori but Kim was just as bad if not worse thanks to EX Hangetsuzan being fucking retarded. Beni is a top character in every KoF game that anyone gives a shit about as well.

Vanilla 2k2 sucks. I played it in arcades when I was younger, but never got really any good at it.

2k2 UM on Steam is good, but I like 98UM:FE better.

Psycho Ball was nerfed in UM and Psycho Shoot is hardly better. In most of the older games Athena can get an unblockable setup with psycho ball and teleport, especially the games where she has her command grab. Psycho Ball is still a good move in modern KoF but it's much weaker than it was in the Neo Geo era titles.

it's not. only 98um is, which is the version with very poor balance. your only options for 98umfe are specific asian nesica arcade cabinets or steam (which has bad netcode).

The ACA ones don't have arranged music because they are straight arcade ports. The arranged soundtracks are only in the console versions which usually have enough new content to qualify as a rerelease.

SNK's parent company is Chinese and China prioritizes 97 above all else. That, and China has their own client to play 98UMFE so they don't give a shit about any port.

98umfe has dogshit netcode compared to 98/02/etc on fightcade or even XIV. it's also an awful choice for local play as PC ports are 99% of the time.

no all of those reasons pretty much confirm that it's nothing inherently wrong with the PC platform but fuckers just can't figure it out. I mean:

no, you can't figure out that 98umfe inconsistently supports hot plugging and regularly fails to identify controllers. even when it does, you often run into dual mapping issues where it reads both controllers on 1p and 2p simultaneously. or it might not read the controller at all. you might have to install drivers that allow that controller to work but cause another to fail.
this does not happen on console ports. consoles have consistent, reliable controller support that allows you to plug/unplug at a moment's notice. pc tournaments are hell because they cannot do this and this is why 99% of fighting game tournaments are held on console, even when the pc version has a more consistent framerate, lower input delay, or any number of other benefits.
