You traverse the Twilight Trail first to reach the Creepy Steeple, once without any partners, once with a new partner, and the last two times you can just run away from fights, taking about 5 minutes. General White's backtracking was an in-game joke, they even made you hit him with a hammer a ton to wake him up just to drag it on longer.

Well it has to be specific to the character. For example if she was a witch boo that worked for the shadow queen, her hat and/or outfit should carry a similar style to shadow queen aesthetic. Kind of like Lakilester in Paper Mario, same design as the bad guys, but with a slight difference.

Pretty good, worst part is going from the Sewers back to Hooktail's Castle, the castle has a couple of keys to go back for but it's mostly ok.
>Chapter 2
Backtracking starts when you first meet Flurrie. You go back to the beginning of Boggly Woods to fight the Shadow Sirens, you go back to Flurrie, then you finally head for the tree. The tree has you go back and forth a few times, mostly to get the Punies back from the cages. Overall a little annoying but forgivable.
>Chapter 3
Different kind of chapter, you mostly hang around in a small hub with new events taking place and fighting. Hit or miss depending on the person.
>Chapter 4
Fight Doopliss > Back to Twilight Town for Vivian > Back to Creepy Steeple for P > Back to Twilight Town to name him > Back to Creepy Steeple for the fight
A few things to note is before you begin it you're backtracking to get into the pipe from Darkly. You lose Yoshi so you're slower than normal, the level design doesn't really make the tube's speed reliable either. The glitchless WR for this speedrun-wise has the time take 13 minutes from the first Doopliss fight to the end of the chapter, a more casual playthrough will take longer of course.
>Chapter 5
Get stranded on island > Go to the bridge to see Bobbery save everyone which makes you go back 1 room (whatever) > find Bobbery "dying" > Go back to get Chuckola > Optionally go back to the bridge to get the Coconut if you didn't on the way back > Go back to Bobbery > Go back to Flavio for his gem > Finally get into the Grotto
Half of chapter 5 is almost as bad as chapter 4, WR takes 6 minutes to do it all, at least the latter half of the chapter is good.

Similar to Chapter 3 with it's focuses, you go back and forth between each train passage though. It'll be hit or miss. Riverside Station is good though.

General White, pretty obvious. WR takes 12~ minutes to do all of that.

Ehh, I always felt the backtracking in Twilight Town was done to express the gimmick of the whole chapter, with there being two Marios doing the loops around the castle.
The General White thing was clearly done to incite the player to go back, pick up stuff they missed or becomes available with later partners and sidequest in general. Some games have sidequest breaks like these,

Not him but I don't think that really excuses Chapter 4, they could've done more even if you were going back and forth like maybe expand upon the well area outside of Creepy Steeple or something, the place was super underdeveloped and it could've been a big showcase for Vivian's ability as that is also underused that chapter. As it is now the chapter is just small hallways.
That's how I saw it for General White but I still find it to be rather poor design as you'll have a variety of players who just want to progress, especially on repeat playthroughs. It doesn't help past chapters don't exactly have anything new going on in them unless you do some troubles.
