sure, but the camera switching, that usually accompanied it, was somewhat painful at times.

yeah

7 having a "you're here" button is funny.

Pre-rendered backgrounds are the absolute source of soul.

>American town
>Can barely fit one car down the street
Yikes

did it really have one?

If you render a prerendered scene in real time, will it look the same?

i.e. if you tried to run FFIX natively on PS4 (pretend it is powerful enough to render in real time) would the scene just look the exact same?

Yeah the select button finger pointer thing.

I love them.

Sure do

I do, the backgrounds in P5 really made the scenes pop.

Does Chrono Cross have the best backgrounds on the PS1? I've never even played much of it but going through a rip of the backgrounds, it seems to beat most of the FFs.

Yes. I spend a few minutes to soak up every screen if theyre good. Chrono Cross and FF7 are some of my favorites. Prerendered bgs arent discussed enough here.

No, they get old fast, specially after a screen ratio change.

it better serves the gameplay to have narrow flow in your level design.

they can be great when done right

the japs really blew it with that one. they assumed americans were normal sized

Wrally ho!

I should play CC. But I don't like the battle system...

maybe, but isn't the whole point to render them in advance thus make the game run smoother?

Japs aren't normal sized, they're midgets. This street is designed for midgets and their toy cars.

with the ray tracing that every pre rendered shit uses, maybe at 0.1 fps on the ps4 at 720p

Yeah just wondering if there's something unique about the look given to it by prerendering.

Is the lighting in these that crazy?

all those CRTs

Soulful to be sure.

ray tracing time is generally resolution*samples, the bigger the resolution and less noise in the final image, the more samples are needed,it's a technique only suitable for pre rendered stuff, ofc real time engines have always found other ways to make lighting look on par with it,but it's still way too costly to have ray traced lighting in real time

Why did FFX use pre-rendered backgrounds but only selectively? Could it not render the amount of small objects in stores and inns or something?

doesn't this lock you to a screen resolution?

What was the last game that had good ones?

They're some of the most memorable scenes i've have in vidya.
Something about a static background is so pleasing, it lets you focus on all the small details. I feel like a lot of that is lost in modern RPGs.

SOOOOUUUUUUUUULLLLL

Pillars of Eternity 2 has some.

why not? there's no rule saying you have to use the same style and perspective throughout an entire game

FF7 does. Artistic direction > pure polygon power

I know but why purposely do it just for certain interiors
