My problem with Makoto is that her joining the partyis when the writing starts to rapidly decline both in scenario and characterization wise. Protag/Ryuji/Ann/Yusuke/Morgana felt very solid with each other, especially because the first two dungeons were well done overall.

Makoto is really the developer's favorite pet and you can tell by how the narrative immediately shifts to not only make her the second most important member in the group by virtue of being 'intelligent and analytical', but she (and Futaba later on) get a disproportionate amount of screentime to themselves while Ryuji/Ann are reduced to cardboard cutouts of themselves while Yusuke is Just There. Even Haru gets immediately shoved off to the side.

Futaba has her own problems, and it doesn't help that her characterization was ruined when they turned her scenario into 'my mother really did love me all along omg'. It would have been more interesting if that ended up being subverted but having Futaba come to terms with it and move on, but nope.

In any case, the game seems to value style over substance, and the JP polls reflect that. Fujo bait is near the top, Makoto was literally made to appeal to as many popular tropes as possible, while characters such as Haru/Ann/Ryuji get shoved to the bottom because the game fucks over their characterization and because Japan and the devs hate blonds/bro characters...unless you're a closeted faggot like Yosuke of P4, then the fujos will lap that up eagerly.

The reasons I didn't mind Futaba as much as Makoto are probably:
- her "schtick" is being a genius hacker. I can buy her being the-one-in-a-million convenient hacker since I generally don't see her actually hack and can assume competence there whereas I see Makori fail at being "smart" firsthand since the game makes you see her do the work. Also, for whatever it's wortg, whenever Futaba bullshits hacks she usually either has pplenty of time, extensively prepares for the situation or is "hacking" the collective uncoscious with her Persona, so it generally avoids the biggest prtoblem with portrayal of hacking (she doesn't do stuff in a minute).
- For however waifubaity her "problem" is, the game treats it as an actual character flaw that hinders her, whereas Makoto's "flaws" are half not her own fault and half superficial.
- she really doesn't hurt the party dynamics as bad as Makoto, even if her solutions to real-world problems sdo force the Thieves to be less creative. Still, they showed most creativity in Mementos anyway, and there she really isn't as overpoweringly usrful, as I remember.
Also, her dungeon was a lot better for how it was a shift of tone to P4-like goal.
