WoW has always been about the endgame, the journey to 60 is fun and full of fuckery but it's still just the first 2 weeks of /played.

1-60 was still part of the experience, rather than something relegated to filler like it is today.

It's shut down quickly because people who've played it recently say it's held up well and they enjoyed it or they realized it was nostalgia, you can't really fight that. This happened in an OOT thread recently. For classic all you have is private servers which some players avoid for various reasons. When classic comes out we'll find people saying the same things as with OOT, except they no one can deny them how they actually feel. Obviously some will love it and some will hate it, the interesting thing will be the percentages.

That's the nature of a base version of a game vs its expansions. Nobody actually enjoys grinding 1-60 just as much as nobody actually enjoyed grinding 60-70 beyond the first go around. I got into WoW after seeing my friend's older brother raid AQ on his warrior at a LAN party. Collecting 6 bear asses isn't what drives me and I feel pretty confident in saying that most of the playerbase isn't interested in it either.
