That already distances the character away from the player. Couple this with the fact that they talk on their own and move on their own in cutscenes makes things much worse.
On the other hand a profession title is literally just what you are on paper. The class you choose in character creation would've been a much better "name" seeing how that's actually something we can choose, making it more personal as a result.
