How is this even cosmic/eldritch? It's literally just top-down survival STALKER ripoff.
Did you get to the very end?
Demons Souls has the Old One which is an eldritch horror.
Why is space so scary?
Because humans are unable to fully grasp the concepts of infinity and nothingness
etrian odyssey iii
Grim Dawn
So it counts if it's only at the end? Then add Etrian Odyssey 3
Link's Awakening is surprisingly quite Lovecraftian when you think about it

Just read the short stories from the Cthulhu mythos that HP Lovecraft created. They’re enjoyable

I've read all of them already, that's why I search for related vidya now since we don't have proper eldritch movies or anime.

what the fuck user
does anyone know where I can get a fully translated collection of his works?
Can we consider that Dead Space has the most fucked up setting that goes by the worst case scenario in all the vidya?
Starbound has some minor degree of eldritch cosmic space horror. Devs really dropped the ball by not doing more with their game. You get a better taste of things with frakken universe and gas planets and madness planets and such.
Yea visually a good example. Only issue I have with that is how fathomable it all is. Given the lore, the whole thing with Hermaus Mora hasn't left much up to my imagination anymore.
Good news kid. A game called The Sinking City will release this upcoming summer. And they didn’t even try to hide the fact that the monster on the cover is Cthulhu, the Great Old One. It’s literally his design
Don't Starve has elements of it.
Rain World
Quake 1
Sorry user, I'm a lazy fucker. Here, have some arts at least.
%%Well, if you a slav you can get the torrent. But I think there's an english translation exists as well since Junji is pretty popular dude.%%
>the only cosmic being is some pimple with tentacles that called "Shub-Niggurath" and can be slashed with a shitty axe

Is there any games inspired by Junji works? Looks much better than those overwhelming Berserk stuff.

at least know what your talking about before you go full retard
Tormentum: Dark Sorrow has some pretty great imagery. It's more akin to Giger and Beksinski's work, but it's a fun little Point and Click if you like grotesque visuals.
>Want a game featuring cosmic horror
>Knowing a game deals with cosmic horror partially ruins it
Going into a game already knowing you'll end up encountering outer entities and elder things isn't nearly as interesting as dealing with something else entirely and slowly discovering the bigger picture.
>Lovecraft = tentacles
Did you ever read a single of his books? Not his fault brainlets only know about Cthulhu
That's a kirby boss

This type of shit. I'd wait for it to go on sale though. I bought when it was like $5.
Deal with it, user. With all the unlimited internet stuff, imboards, fandoms and wikies you can't go blindly into games without knowing what to expect. That's the reality.
>tfw the balloon head story never gets fully storytimed before threads are deleted
I swear I've read the first half around a dozen times never getting to the end.
This. I kind of feel sad for anons who didn't go into bloodborne fully blind, for one.
>junji ito stories
>the end
Heh.
I went into it knowing only that it was about a hunter fighting beasts in a Victorian setting.
Boy, was I in for a treat.
hellstar remina had some sort of an ending
I loved that one work of his that dealt with a daughter forming layers of herself for each year she grew up, and that her mother started tearing her skin off to reach her daughter's younger self.
Man, I'd love to see a remake of Quake 1 with modern graphics and eldritch horrors beign even more terrific
Yeah, I just expected some castlevania-tier stuff with giant spiders on the spires, so it was kinda...sudden.
>monster girl
god fucking dammit
Kirby
What I do really like about his works is that it usually starts as some goofy and funny horror when it suddenly turns for 90 degrees in the middle and then blow you with some mindfuck in the very end.
Can someone storytime remina for fucks sake?
I really hope they remaster this in 4K/HDR at some point

Separate the art from the artist, idiot.
A lot of old games have this stuff. Actually, they did it even better than nowadays.
>can't separate art from artist

Is this any good?
>art
>artist
>they never read a single lovecraft written story
He included his racism in his work like it’s nothing
Didn't he name one of the monster Niggurath or some shit, lmfao.
If you're into both romantic and lovecraftian stuff so yeah, it's great.
From SMT, Strange Journey has a bit of this in its depiction of demons and the Schwarzwelt. Also, Persona 2 has Nyarlathotep dicking around as the main antagonist. Other games pretty much just have weird angels I haven't played DDS, the Devil Survivor games or the Devil Summoner games so I can't speak for them but Nocturne almost feels like it goes in an eldritch direction with Isamu and the Amala Network.
>slice of life with chtulhu
Ok
So was basically everyone else from that period in time.
I'm reading it right now and honestly I think this at the start of every chapter
>clearly supernatural stuff happens
>multiple people close to her have died or become monsters
>boyfriend tells her the town is fucked every chance he gets
>saves her life at least once per chapter
>dumb slut still tells him that there is no reason to leave
Just what was her fucking problem?
Yes because turn of the century America was such a shining beacon of modern, liberal progressive thought, it's all Lovecraft's fault for being such a meanie.
Still pisses me off how it ended.
>Eldritch monsters completely overrun the entire world
>Humans: just shoot it lmao
>Humans win
How come Yea Forums doesn't use this logic when it comes to Phil Fish?
because he's an asshole and his game is gay lol
The movie went full shit at the end for the sake of cynic kiddos. It was much better in the original.
But that's one of the reasons why he was based
Does the protag a loli?
>Racists aren't based
What was the original end?
Well, depends on what is loli for you. I think she looks about 16 y.o
>needing to separate it
Even for the time he was exceptionally racist. If he saw a black man in the street, he would he into an uncontrollable rage.
give me some suggestions of lovecraft's work to read
Nothing has ended. Mcs went to the other place on a car. In the very end, they hear some voice from the radio that probably could be of survivors, so they've got a faint gleam of hope, and that's the end.

He probably had severe debilitating autism.
I would!
They can't leave town anyways, it won't let them. And there's implications that it's preventing people from thinking of leaving as an option, along with downplaying the insanity of whats going on to the outside world.

Demon's souls had so much potential to get all the continues. Instead of this we get all that boring shit about "oh no, my fire fades, what do???". Pathetic.
Any self respecting Lovecraft/Weird Tales fan should play both seasons.

-Shadow of the Comet
-Prisoner of Ice
-Darkness Within 1&2
-Scratches
-The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Guess all of love crafts works are pointless too because I know they deal with such things. Get the fuck out of here.
Ito is still helping Kojima with Death Stranding though.
Dunno why nobody ever talk about that when they mention DS development, that fact is huge.
Her eyes actually are on inside of the macaroni. Those green things are just kinda decorative.
>Ito is still helping Kojima with Death Stranding
All this time I had no idea. There's definitely a bizarre factor, from what little we've seen in DS.
It's almost two years without any proper news, so, kinda...yeah?
>There's definitely a bizarre factor
There definitely is, just look at the black goo or all that thing with invisible hands.
Terraria would count I think
>not putting Black Paradox in good tier
bullshit tier list
Cthulhu is a popular monstrous figure and people just wanna use it for the recognition it has. Not sure I like the 40’s setting of the game as Lovecraft never even had a story of that time period. I would let it slide if they just kept a lovecraftian horror inspiration but they're literally using Cthulhu as a prominent figure. It’s annoying
>Black Paradox
Never read it but I'll do it now.
huh i was just thinking about this manga this morning, was it because of the blackwhole that reminded you of it op?
I find it very hard to for games to actually get what the cosmic horror feel is about (not that i am a expert on horror writing). I personally feel like Bloodborne did a good job at it but i don't even know where to start on describing on how it did it well. It's very weird because typically a "Lovecraft" game is just gonna be tentacles, water and cults. But that's why it's such shame when games do it like that, because you have the basic idea of the far reaches of the cosmos, yet you limit yourself to something so basic. Again i think Bloodborne did it well just because the atmosphere of the game i suppose y'know?
Things went from weird to eldritch real quick, but it was done well enough for it to be, i guess like the novelty of it was i guess refreshing? The setting of the game also helped a lot because you were initially just dealing with beasts and such but you goto from that to real odd creatures. Man i have nooo idea how to describe i just want a game like Bloodborne to make me feel like that again.
>Human Chair
only brapfags and autismos liked that because they can self insert
Shit you good me. I still think I have great taste.
Doesn't mean it's cancelled.
Someone already mentioned it on the thread but if you advertise something as being cosmic horror some of the tension is already lost, and that is why Bloodborne did it great. The entire game was advertised and shown as being a game about going around and killing beasts in a fucked up town, but then halfway thru the moon fucking goes red and suddenly you are now going into alternate dimensions and killing eldritch creatures. It also helped that the level and enemy design was top notch in most of the areas. Say what you will about Nightmare of Mensis but that shit was amazing.
Because its dark out there
H4MIA-4XGEZ-2J5ZA
>Eldritch monsters completely overrun the entire world
That never happened. It was only that region because a government facility was there that basically had a Half-Life scenario happen where they accidentally into another dimension. It was quarantined, which is why everyone inside had no idea what was going on outside of their area.
For real? I just started this game and it's you and your bros adventuring in a comfy forest
The ultimate superboss in EOIII is literally called Abyssal God
Imagine finding something like that while exploring the dark depth of the ocean.
Thank you
jesus fucking christ what
I thought it was a game about happy pink rats and butterflies and shit
If you want Cosmic Horror instead of Eldritch Horror EOV's 6th Stratum is just space. That's it, the cold emptiness of space with one of the more out there stratum songs.
I had these more with Marrow than with BB since I've read a lot about BB's lore until I finally bought the ps4 and there also was a lot of hype since the release, so I more or less knew what to expect, when marrow hasn't had a single walkthrough or video, almost nothing at all. So, since the game itself doesn't gives a single fuck about you aka no descriptions, no maps, no exposition, nothing at all, I've got through it fully blind. So yeah, that's how I got a pure cosmic horror experience not from goty but from some shitty gamemaker title.
imagine the succ
This is the right way to approach things, scary or unnerving things in something that isn't horror always sticks out more to people. That's part of why the Predator was such a good movie; everyone went in expecting an action movie and halfway through it becomes a slasher film. The best way to do a cosmic horror kind of game is to give the player no inclination that is what's going on. Like the first Quake. You're running around shooting dudes and then BAM extra dimensional monsters show up and you're trying to keep them from overrunning our reality.
X-COM Terror From the Deep did a good job of this, too. You think you're still fighting aliens and then by the last level you're trying to keep Dagon from waking up. Not even killing him, just keeping him from waking up.
What was it?
Fatal Bullet
>we will never play an x-com styled game as delta green trying to stop cults from taking over the world and fish people starting the apocalypse
>or an x-com styled game as the BPRD trying to stop the plague of frogs and hell on earth
Why bother living?
No. Deadspace is weak shit.
Didn't the US military destroy the deep ones with bombs in the shadow over innsmouth?
>we will never play proper scp game based on x-com mechanics
Fixed.
They blew up their settlements around Innsmouth and shelled Dagon with artillery enough to force him back into the deep ocean.
>scp
Plebeian.
How about a thread theme actually inspired by Lovecraft
Fuck it, spoil it for me, what did the ending mean? I thought he made it out.
In the eyes of the aliens we ARE the cosmic horrors for this is the kind of shit that they cannot comprehend. What other existence in the universe looks at something they don’t know and then think “yeah I want to fuck that”?
Because we don't belong here at all and our doom is out there.
EO3 was the only EO game with shit directly referencing Lovecraft’s work. I mean a bunch of underwater humanoids called the Deep Ones worshipping an ancient cosmic being that lives in the deepest part of the ocean was not exactly being subtle either. Hell they even had a reference to the Mad Arab in there too if I can remember.
Mc awakes somewhere underground the wood where there's a lot of human bodies and also a huge eldritch entity that was the reason for all the shit happened in the game. Mc burns it all with the flamethrower and also dies.
>no mentions of Giygas
>body horror
This is my one no no when it comes to horror.
For me it's existential horror like SOMA. Teleporters also scare the hell out of me.
>a lone soldier fights tooth and nail through increasingly nightmarish worlds that transcend time and space
>dark oppressive atmosphere in these alien worlds full of ruins that were old before humanity's ancestors ever born
>Ranger is shown to be shell-shocked and changed by his experiences with this truer reality
>these worlds are ruled over by insane and indifferent alien gods
You also don't beat Shub-Niggurath with an axe you fucking poser. Also Quake Champions implies that Shub-Niggurath isn't really dead.
If they used the Quake Champions assets as a base, and darkened it up a bit, I'd be down for it.
Should check out that movie The Void then. For a bunch of Canadians making a budget movie that shit was great. Shame it dropped the ball so hard with the main antagonist but it was still great.
It's a shame the anime was so shit. The quality was so bad.
Oh man that movie was fucking awesome.
wouldnt make a lot of sense considering most SCP's would be insta-kill on contact melee units or something.
what would be the point of a cover taking system in a game when the enemie literally just appears behind you at random and snaps your neck?
thats the dumbest idea for a SCP game I've heard yet. if you want a good SCP game try Lobotomy Corp or that multiplayer role-playing server one.
>yfw the reason for your death will never be from receiving the cosmic succ from a giant space girl
WHY ARE WE HERE?
Why? Nothing to say they don't do the same shit too.
Shes only beaten by telefragging her to negate her literal infinite health. And Quake Champions shows that this didn't actually do shit for dick to her.
You don't need to style an SCP tactics game as your standard MTF unit going into a situation. You can just as easily have it be team of Mekhanites going in to beat back Yaldabaoth and its servants in a forever war.
>Imagine finding something like that while exploring the dark depth of the ocean.

>True Detective season 1 for extremely low key cosmic horror (like it's arguable if it is or it's just the protagonists mental instability)
That was the only reason I liked season 1. The implications of it were really cool and well done. Then they completely shit the bed by ignoring all of that in season 2. It's like they didn't realize that's what a lot of people liked about it. If they went straight horror mystery shit in season 2 with occult shit and monsters it'd have been 10/10.
Will it be kino?
The big bad of the game is quite literally the very forest itself. It's a malevolent genius loci mutating people into hideous servants to it to foster its growth, and it regularly lures in people to its heart so that it can assimilate them and spread even more. Stopping it required you to more or less sacrifice everything and burn it all to the ground, with it taking you down with it. And in one ending, you don't even endure against it. It just flat out wins.
It also ties really well into the whole "inspired by Robert W. Chamber's King in Yellow stories" they were going for, since a major theme of those stories is how reality becomes tenuous to those exposed to the entropic effects of The King in Yellow. Is reality beginning to fray at the seams? Or is Rust just going fucking nuts? We don't know. True Detective season 1 is the best low-key adaptation of a Delta Green scenario.
Silent Hill sorta?
One can only hope. Have you read the manga of it? It's really good.
every fromsoft game
It was lightning in a bottle. I just wish they would have kept going with that angle instead of completely missing why people liked it.
Silent Hill is literally on the opposite side since it's mostly a stuff that happens inside mcs minds.
>color
And then the series died. All becuase they made it a boring ass generic investigative show like CIS instead of going full Laundry Files with it.
>directed by the guy who did Hardware
>produced by the guys who did Mandy
>starring Nicholas Cage again
Oh yes it will.
Deadly Premonition is many things, including cosmic horror.
Majority of Silent Hill has been revealed to be actually happening in a malignant other world, and several monsters are consistent between victims (like Pyramid Head). It's implied that either the town itself got cursed, or it became an otherworldly horror over time.
Shame that all the god-tier atmosphere and suspense of 1 season went full shit in the very end. The second one, disregard all the boring political stuff, made it way better.
I've already finished it and literally every chapter her boyfriend is begging her to ditch town with him, but she won't leave her dumb family.
basically all from soft games
What was the book about?
She was retarded af, I dunno maybe it's a japanese thing, her insistance on everything being okay gave me some I Am A Hero vibes.

>that ending
It was goddamit cathartic but seriously, con somebody describe me wtf with all these planets suddenly appear??
Haven't read it yet but it's about a meteorite that corrupts the area around it. I guess it sounds kinda similar to Annihilation.
Yeah, Rust going "the light is winning" felt like such a cop-out to appeal to happy ending fags. The fucking Cult is still active and is protected by the highest echelons of the government. All they did was knock out the the bottom elements of it.

Keeping tabs on this one. Immediately thought of call of chuthulu while watching the trailer. I liked CoC, but it could've been better.
The cult that kidnapped Mandy believed her fantasy art was visions of other worlds, and Red's trauma has shaken his grasp on mundane consensus reality, and now he sees the worlds she drew.
Also to add
Beyond the Black Rainbow
This, and also all the stuff about summoning gods
Meteorite crashes into farmland. Messes with vegetation and animals. Makes farm family sick and die. A flying fuck shoots out from the ground back into space. People who saw it goes “woah”
I wish I was kidding but that was it. Probably the most boring story out of Lovecraft’s works. I’m not saying every story gotta involve someone using a boat to knock out an ancient god but goddamn just spending half the book describing the most mundane mutation possible and then ending with “oh uh it just fucks off” was a waste of time. Can’t believe I actually went to a library to read that shit.
>tfw I once completely dumped Remina back in 2014's blood moon
it took like 4 fucking threads
i wouldn't say silent hill is cosmic horror, because the forces in those games are personal to the PCs.
Cosmic horror is impersonal in its delivery — giant creatures with motives and thought processes that we can't understand or that barely involve us as a factor. Nyarlathotep wouldn't sit down and have a chat about how you're sad that your wife died or somesuch.
The point is that there was a whole lotta time to leave the town before it got cosmic fucked. One incident may not have been good enough reason to leave town. That’s fine. But when your classmates starts turning into human snails, maybe it’s high time to start packing shit.
It's about the slow mental and physical degeneration of a hapless farming family because of forces beyond their comprehension. A piece of that "truer reality" that exists beyond human laws has pierced that fragile bubble that exists around us, and it brings misery and suffering by its very presence. It's creepy as hell, and its a slow burn.
>personal to the PCs
only in 2
1 and 3 deals with the cult
any eldritch anime?
What was wrong with the Junji Ito adaption?
The protagonist learns from telepathic dreams with his Deep One ancestor that all the sub did was hurt the Deep One settlement, not kill it. In Delta Green, they go back and finish the job, but the Deep Ones just go further into the abyssal depths to bide their time.

I haven't seen Hammer of the Gods but how is it cosmic horror? The plot sounds just like your usual deep woods voodoo fuckery with vikings.
Still bummed we never got that sequel/spiritual successor.
I loved the premise of Eternal Darkness, watching how the conflict and tragedies escalated across the ages and seeing how all the different characters' stories connected to one another. Shame we never got to see it expanded upon.
You got the fake ending, if you notice enough wrong things with the apartment you’ll get the real ending like said.

How was season 3?
If there's ever another Drakengard, I hope it touches on the cosmic horror madness of the first game.
>several monsters are consistent between victims (like Pyramid Head)
I can't help but interpret that as a retcon from Homecoming. Different monsters bleed into other people's perceptions of Silent Hill, like Angela's father, but I feel like Pyramid Head was still a specific product of James's guilt.
None. Night Land is all but impossible to replicate in vidya.
Saya no Uta is not a lovecraftian game, it's an elaborate metaphor about pedophilia.
>protagonist is trapped in a world of agony
>literally the only relief is a little girl he has sex with
>He never even TRIES to explain this or get help, because he knows he could be persecuted
>a woman discovers what he's hiding, so he kidnaps her and kills her
>in the end he must choose between admitting what he did was wrong and being committed, killing her, or going insane
Shin Megami Tensei II might have been inspired by it. the story takes place in a post apocalyptic world full of horrors where humanity only survives inside a pyramid.
"Please take care of me from now on!"
Bitch you just swore to do the laundry, get in the fucking work shed.
I love everything about Sunless Sea except for the actual gameplay.
Im still hoping the "nintendo reviving previously cancelled game" rumor is about eternal darkness 2
First two series were boring, but the further it goes the more interested and atmospheric it gets. Though, I'm only on 6 now.
Also, it surprisingly haven't got much sjw shit of nowadays as I expected. On the other hand, it can't compete in atmosphere or characters with the previous seasons.
The mist was probably only keeping the creatures alive temporarily. They were like beached whales in our atmosphere, except they could move.
If R-Type could do it, then I don't see why Eternal Darkness couldn't.
Speaking of which; R-Type is a really damn good example of cosmic horror itself.
She cooked the entire month's food supply for one meal. We're gonna die.
one protagonist is a nigger, this pretty much says it all
That'd be nice, but I wouldn't get excited before hearing any actual news.
Doesnt that thing got an extra lewd mouth and tongue?
I ain't saying she a gold digger, but she isn't doing the chores of a man without a historic home.
oh fuck
Taro has been building back up to the Watchers and the Gods taking center stage again. 3 was all about one of their agents fucking over the entire cast, and Automata was implied to have resulted from their machinations.
that's the rub isn't it
and the gameplay of sunless skies is a massive improvement on it, but at the cost of taking off the veil on the cosmic horror stuff, lessening the quiet sense of unease.
Liked Fran Bow a lot more than I expected too when it came to the more otherworldly and fantastical aspects of the horror.
Yes on the tongue
ever got so crazy you turned into coins?
At the Mountains of Madness is his best work imo, although Shadow Out of Time and Shadow over Innsmouth are also good. Under the Pyramids, The Music of Erich Zann and Pickman’s Model are all underrated. Call of Cthulhu is most well-known work.
>Twin Peaks
>Cosmic Horror
What?
>and Automata was implied to have resulted from their machinations.
Drakengard's Ending E resulted in Nier, but I've seen all kinds of theories about how Accord's time-traveling and dimension jumping will happen sometime after Automata and loop back into being the thing that brought magic to Midgard and started the conflict in Drakengard in the first place.
And we still don't know where Accord came from, just that she's apparently chilling on the other side of the world during the events of Automata.
I'm always on the look for more modern takes on cosmic horror. I love Lovecraft's themes and respect his creativity, but I find his actual prose a bit too dry and emotionally distant for my liking.
My pp hard
The original series has some signs of it, but the Return solidifies it with the existence of JUDY.
What year is this?
Mother 2
It had some alien shit but I also can't figure out out how did that user connect this to cosmic horror?
I don't know about OP, but has anyone ever gotten too the end of Siren Blood Curse to see this horrific thing? Who the fuck were they thinking with this down right horror?
Can you give some recommendations? I also search for this stuff. No matter wgat: books, vidya, manga, porn, whatever.
I hope that Sinking City turns out alright. It looks kind of jank, but I have a soft spot for horror themed games that actually let you explore and interact with a weird town and its weird people.
All of Siren's big beds are cosmic horrors. Kaiko's the most blatant about it, but Otoshigo and Mother from 2 were literally born from the darkness that predated creation prior to God willing light into being. And Datasushi from 1 was an extradimdnsional super-alien-demon-fish-thing.
What so strange about it? If I remember correctly, Siren contains a lot of weird insect-bodyhorror stuff.
The only good eldritch horror games are the ones that don't directly plagiarize lovecraft.

>but I find his actual prose a bit too dry and emotionally distant for my liking.
Try reading his Dreamland's stuff, especially Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Lovecraft's romanticism is in full force there, and if you don't tear up when Nyarlathotep reveals that Carter's sunset city is actually his hometown of Boston, you have no soul.
But if you want more modern stuff, I recommend reading Ramsey Campbell, Thomas Ligotti, and Delta Green. Stephen King has Crouch End, Revival, 1408, and N. Also check out Charles Stross' Laundry Files, and especially his short story "A Colder War". If you like audio, you should listen to the creepypasta "The Horror from the Vault"
But especially check out A Colder War.

Sauce is Ma no Kakera
another thing that other user didn't mention, the book implied that the mist wasn't a localized event like the movies, it more implied that both worlds were merged (large holes in the ground and the mist just appearing, not being a huge fogwall, etc)
you ever read John Dies at the end?
it's incredibly shit, someone recommended it to me because i said that i enjoyed cosmic horror, and it remains one of my least favorite books
it felt like the author jammed a speaker in the fucking book and kept a live feed of his shitty opinions blaring at you
never read it.
it's hard to find good cosmic horror because a lot of authors like to quantify the exact spookem that their protagonists are facing.
or it's probably that i'm shit at looking for books
>you'll never frag shubs with Lovecraft in the Vale of Pnath
youtu.be
Fucking end me, lads.
If you want Lovecraftian themes treated by an actual genius, just read Kafka.
So Bloodborne is shit?
Its a Japanese thing. They always say that.
SHAMBLIN' NIGGAS
Gravity Rush
I will never understand why konami just said "fuck it" and threw away GOTY.
Literally one of the most well received demos for ANY video game ever.
I think John Dies at the End is a book people either love or hate. It has a lot of weird humor, which the unreliable narrator claims is his way of coping with his situation, but when it takes itself seriously there are some interesting cosmic horror themes.
What I like about it is that it's not really about someone trying to truly beat or escape the horror that they've seen, so much as it is about them trying to survive day-to-day life with the casual madness of what it brings.
That bitch done fucked herself into a house.
>Kafka
>cosmic horror
lowqualitybait.jpg
Kafka is too personal and anchored by humanity to be cosmic horror though.
No meat touching ma'am.
Is that a fucking light on the top of its head?
More like Love Love Deluxe
DUSK gets pretty cosmic after mid Episode 2, I really liked that the final boss is Nyarlathotep and voiced by Stephan Weyte, a shame that the actual fight its kinda ehh by the game standard
Konami are a bunch of dick-slurping pachinko pushers. They shot themselves in the foot because they thought they could make more money just from trying to get more brainless morons on their pachinko train.
Well surprise. They succeeded in becoming irrelevant.
Its almost berserk 2016 tier bad.
business-wise it's probably because kojima either'll make a very successful game for you, or go WAY over budget adding in content.
they probably can afford him breaking the budget, but it hurts their bottom line in the short term and very possibly in the long term, which is a no-no to the shareholders.
and japan's culture being all that it is in regards to superior-subordinate relationships, they go to please the shareholders over the throngs of people clamoring for the game. hence the pachinko mines
it all makes sense from a business standpoint— risk v. reward and all that — but that's a shitty way to look at it imo
Haiyore Nyarko-san is the best eldritch-themed anime. As for what Junji Ito's anime did wrong; it didn't capture the feeling that the manga has. It matched the humor, but not the horror.
Ah yes, Orphan of Kos is my favorite lovecraft monster. Right next to his story about Mergo's wet nurse.
It's a good book to read. If you focus on the cosmic aspect of it, it gets really strange, up to reality warpers.
Go on
Berserk 1997 and Evangelion are honestly the closest things that spring to mind.
CoCfags, what's the deal with Delta Green? I hear it's a "sourcebook" for CoC, is that like Forgotten Realms is a set setting for DnD? I always wanted to run a CoC thing, maybe a 1 or 2 session thing about a group of guys hunting down a serial killer that has ties to the occult in Dublin
Lost in Vivo because yeah, some surreal stuff going on.
Thanks for story timing, this is really interesting.
Slayer of Demons is the sickest title in the whole series. This is indisputable fact.
Kafka is basically asking “what if were all eldritch abominations to each other and ourselves”.
Made me chuckle at times.
Praise be to Bayagototh.
Finish it fag
Cthulhu isn't "the" great old one, he's just one of them. He's not actually that important, analogous to a priest.
Delta Green is a spin-off to Call of Cthulhu (uses the same system) that solves the "problem" of getting schmucks together and deal with problems by having them be part of a governmental agency that deals with supernatural phenomena. First edition had them be an illegal cell-based conspiracy in a super 90s conspiratorial turn-of-the-millennium angst zeitgeist. The new edition has them merged with their former rivals MAJESTIC-12 to become The Program after 9/11 to become official again, but you can still run games as Outlaws.
There's a British equivalent in the setting called PISCES but Their leadership has been taken over by incest brain parasites call the Shan. So you could easily run a game in Dublin as Delta Green or them.
Trust me you aren't missing much.
Delta Green is an organization that was established after the army raid on Innsmouth that forced the deep ones and dagon back out to sea. The US government realized some serious shit exists and there needs to be an organization to fight them, so from then, to fighting occult nazis in WW2, and then fighting greys in Vietnam, they were officially disbanded and disavowed by the government when an operation went wrong in Cambodia in like '67 that got a lot of people killed. Now they work in the shadows of every level of the government keeping an eye on things to make sure aliens don't take over the world and shit doesn't hit the fan.
Meanwhile, after Delta Green's disbandment the government established ties with the greys (the Mi-Go) after Vietnam and made the Majestic-12 and other agencies to get technology and work with them, not realizing that the aliens are ultimately working over humanity to awaken the Old Ones.
Europa Report is also really good.
>So you could easily run a game in Dublin as Delta Green or them.
No in Britannia he'd be in the Army of the Third Eye. They're the resistance against the Shan and the occult shit over there.
I'm looking forward to the dev's next project. Looks cute and weird.
Hwat the fuck
That sounds cool, thank you for the great explanation user. I can literally use the same character sheets and everything?
Also, how longform can CoC be? For example i'm doing a DnD thing biweekly that is essentially more realistic One Piece, and my DM says that will take us probably the better part of a year to get through. I hear CoC things are much shorter.
Boner stop
WELP
Most of Pisces is actually clean, but the leadership is compromised. You could easily run a game where your players are low-level agents who slowly start piecing together that something isn't right. Army of the Third Eye players could work for a regular Call of Cthulhu game though.
soma was really good
really left me with the sunken hole feeling in my stomach
glad i stuck with it because i quit the first time because got tired of playing hide and seek with the teleporting cunt
Dad may have made some bad choices cause of the dick, but here where it matters he's on the ball.
>tfw no eldritch mommy to take care of me
what's the name of the manga?
Give me more.
color out of space, user
ITOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Why can't this man write endings?
Is this from I Am A Hero or something else? I haven't read the end but it started doing spooky cosmic shit
Investigator (or Agent if you're DG) turnover can be really high. Seeing shit will slowly chip away at your sanity, actually learning how shit actually works lowers your maximum possible sanity, so eventually if your investigator learns too much, he can just become so emotionally fragile that a mild surprise will trigger PTSD and trip to a sanitarium or a vet's hospital
.
Also the combat itself is very lethal, and that's just against other humans. When you start meeting spooky shit, pic related happens.
>a house made of human flesh and hair
>strip the national treasure title and forget about it
EVERY TIME
just wondering is there a doom wad that turns it into an actual survival horror?
like low ammo and not waves of enemies
Obliged, I'll look into them.
I think my difficulty with getting into Lovecraft in the past is just the general modern preference for stories that come from an actual character's perspective, with scenes of visceral in-the-moment reactions, as opposed to long meticulous explanations that take place after the fact. Granted I've only read a handful of his more popular stories, so I don't know how much his style shifts.
>expecting anything other than depression or craziness from Ito
I pity you fools.
>Kid gets TWO big tiddy moms
Living the fucking dream
Lucky kid.
I just don't like slasher horror in general. I didn't like horror at all for ages because my only experience with them were the countless movies with a bunch of dumb interchangeable college kids lining up to get eviscerated.
It wasn't until I played the Silent Hill games that I contemplated the idea of horror as a genre that can explore themes and emotions beyond torture porn.
>depression or craziness
most of his stories end hilariously dumb
Yeah.. The only endings of his that I really like off the top of my head are the Enigma of Amigara Fault and the honey tree one.
I haven't even lurked this thread yet, but given the # of hits and the ITO, I can tell this is gud.
Let's make this weekly broskis.
It's actually a good thing.
Never happened in Metal Wolf Chaos.
Can XCOM join the team of all the eldritch/cosmic bros?
Only Terror From the Deep and Apocalypse.
Only Terror from the Deep. I'm still pissed off about Phoenix Point going EGS exclusive.
>Terror From the Deep
What's the difference between cosmic and aquatic aliens in degrees of eldritch?
Shut the fuck up faggot
Ultimately, cosmic horror is built on the idea of human insignificance of humanity in the grand scheme of things. Aquatic "aliens" are just a sign that we aren't the first race to emerge, we won't be the last, but they'll always be there.
eldritch monsters??
Pirated version of Spyro 2 and 3
The Aquatic Aliens actually worship Dagon at the bottom of the ocean and the last level is to keep him from being woken up. Not even killing him.
They could be pretty eldritch if the ending hasn't ruin the show.
The Shrouded Isle.
>DUDE WHAT IF IT WAS SO GROTESQUE AMD INHUMAN IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE BUT THERES ALSO TENTACLES LMAO
Lovecraftian is on the same level as steampunk
I understand that any visual depiction of cosmic horror takes away one of its central themes but nevertheless what's the best designed eldritch monstrosity you've ever seen? It could be the monster itself or a scenario implying such a thing. I just want a cool wallpaper.
>has never read Lovecraft
Find better bait. Most third-rate trolls just bring up his racism now.
Wouldn't your dick get crushed by gravity? You'd end up with the world's smallest micropeen
>458235890

Shut the fuck up reddit, go back to your cthulu bacon extravaganza
You're literally asking me to file through my BB fanart folder. Here's one.
That's pretty cool user. Got anymore?
Any more?
Go to bed lil' zoom. Don't wanna be tired for that test tomorrow.
cringe
What is that pink window doing there?
SMT IV feels like this when you first arrive in Unclean Ones' country, like this place is hidding something ominous.
youtube.com
And then you learn that "the Eldritch being" is a good guy that you need to revive for the good ending.
>weebshit
As much as I fucking loathe this game, Night in the Woods does have a pretty unique take on the Lovecraftian horror angle.
It's not a tentacled beast, or some mound of unfathomable non-euclidean flesh. It was just a hole. A dark, empty hole that demands the sacrifice of innocent folks. No one understands it, no one can fathom its desires. It just consumes.
I have no idea, looks fucking retarded if you ask me.
I feel like I'm missing some, but I can't remember this late. City of the Living Dead, and The Beyond, I guess, but those are more of a zombie movie that name drops Dunwich and Clark Ashton Smith's Book of Eibon.
Vanishing on 7th Street is also pretty good cosmic horror. Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy have some elements of cosmic horror in them, and the original Japanese version of Pulse, but you could argue that's more of a ghost story.
And if you want, there's a 4 hour long Quake machinima called Seal of Nehahra that's pretty rad for what it is. youtu.be
Don't worry, it never advertised itself as a Lovecraftian horror, I just brought up because other guy mentioned SMT.
nice sjwshit bro
These are great and all but without context they might as well be just grotesque looking aliens. Show me true cosmic horror.
I mean, yeah. You're not wrong. I still think it's a cool concept though, despite the game being garbage.
Nice I'm currently watching the Banshee Chapter right now and I'm after any kind of spooky shit.
Ah, don't really have much cosmic horror art outside of BB's fanart I'm afraid. Sorry, user.
You should check out a movie called Jugface, it sounds right up your alley.
>These are great and all but without context they might as well be just grotesque looking aliens. Show me true cosmic horror.
There is always gotta be that one guy that is never impressed. Always pushing it like a fag.
ooooooooh soooo scary!
There was always a chance someone might post something that we haven't seen before. No need to be rude user.
The Black Goat was a pretty interesting cosmic horror antagonist, not gonna lie. Something that really nothing in the setting understands, and will one day inevitably suck up the entire universe into it in its chaotic unceasing hunger? That's better than any giant cephalopods any day of the month.
This looks super generic and boring. Are you bamboozling me right now, or is this actually legit?
>There was always a chance someone might post something that we haven't seen before. No need to be rude user.
The only way something like this is going to happen is when someone posts a picture that is borderline illegal. Thats when anons will start shitting their pants in fear.
If you like the concept you described for that game, I think you will. Though if you drop it because you don't like the characters, I won't blame you.
not the user that recommended that to you, but jesus people like you make it hard to genuinely share and recommend things with others.
Its got incest tho so its just like my japanese animes.
One can only hope.
>genuine
That was your first mistake.
it's a shame the story went to absolute shit when deadspace 2 became a thing
inb4 party van
Tormentum is the epitome of the "good art, shit everything else" indie game. The ending absolutely blew my mind with how lazy and unimaginative it was.
I'm that user, I don't mind. I've dug through a lot crap, and often the concept alone for a horror movie can carry it for me, but I won't expect to follow that standard. I did like Jugface a lot though.
A family that sleeps together keeps together!
Some guy made a game out of doom that’s kinda like that. Brutal Doom has a hard mode option where you take fucktons of damage and have to spare your shots and play everything more safe. Add in the PS1 OST abd it could get somewhat tense.
The fact that you can do the hard yards of sifting through shit just to have it spat back at you doesn't get you a little miffed? Cunts like that should be doing the searching themselves if they are so fussy about what they like and don't like desu.
>cosmic horror=tentacles and eyes in space
Lame.
This replace the tentacles with anuses and penises desu. That is true kino.
you have it backwards, being anything but is a mistake.
>I'm that user, I don't mind
good user. think i'll give the movie a look myself, now
Remina actually made me feel somewhat anxious last time i read it. Most stuff doesn’t do that.
Ahem... FUCK LOVECRAFT AND FUCK GEIGER.
Beksinski bros where you at?
>the concept alone for a horror movie can carry it for me
This. Most horror films are trash, but it's by far my favorite genre because of this reason.
Then post something better faggot.
>needing to go to the lengths of cosmicshit to find horror.
>not just going to the depths of pure human degeneracy to get your fix
Unless your are some psychopathic incel that gets turned on by that shit desu.
right here, but you're making us look bad by insulting two other legends. one of which worked with an entirely different craft lol
Horror is so subjective that it's expected, and for the most part I've had fun, even with the crap movies. The only thing that riles me up is when people call my Top 5 horror films bad movies.
Alien
The Thing
In the Mouth of Madness
Fright Night
The Fog
Honorable Mention: Phantasm
hey your top 5 horror films are bad movies
>The fog instead of the mist.
You're on notice, mate.
kek
FUCK YOU AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH
>In the Mouth of Madness
Honestly the soundtrack is kinda crap and the props for the monsters look so terrible when compared to the thing. That being said Sam Neil in that role was perfect considering he was in Event Horizon as an equally deranged nutjob. The guy should have been in more horror movies t b h.
It stole a lamp off the thing, that's why it was all up in the canera
more like in the south of badness
At least you didn't have that exocishit on your list. God that movie was fuckin gay.
>but without context they might as well be just grotesque looking aliens
I'll give you some context: BB's Great Ones cannot conceive children themselves. So, they scour for a suitable surrogate and impregnate them, and it is implied, unwillingly. Those who do, end up birthing celestial larvae. One of them (pic related) however chooses to hold its surrogate hostage in a Dreamland. It definitely seems to borrow the r/K selection theory, and Miyazaki conveyed this in an interview some years ago. It's pretty interesting.
Sorry user, John Carpenter is just too good, and The Fog is just perfect town with a dark secret horror with great atmosphere and build up. And as much as I like The Mist, I find the ending to be too darkly comedic to be tragic. I still liked the ending though. Frank Darabont in general is great horror movie director though.
Carpenter had a smaller budget to work with, and sadly he didn't have Rob Bottin to help out with. The music isn't as solid, but it has it's moments, especially the opening theme.
youtube.com
If the thread is still alive, I'll give a link to the old Carpenter website that had fake book cover art and synopses for all the Sutter Cane books.
Sam Neil was also in Possession, and in Daybreakers, which has a god-tier first half.
Any games out there that start normal but slowly have cosmic horror shit become more and more involved as the game goes on
I got a real fetish for progression when it comes to this kind of shit, tentacle space monsters from the start is lame but shit devolving into tentacle space monsters from normal shit is fun
oh and fuck you if you reply to this with Kirby
I know the context user. Just wanted a picture that gives you that feeling just by looking at it.
Your about 500 posts too late to be asking for that request desu.

Found it! I hope you like Sutter Cane, another mask of Nyarlathotep!
