Extend the current falloff range to at minimum the range of sentry fire so you can still headshot the engie, remove the weapon accuracy downside and you got a fairly decent weapon that addresses certain complaints people had about the weapon and still keep what spies actually used the amby for (Close to mid range fighting for when the knives were not viable).

How about make it the usual schtick: The fallout applies to body shots but not to the headshot component. Rewards good spies who can land shots and allows them to fight at all ranges but punishes bad spies and make them fight more close and mid range until they can consistently land those shots.
Also we are dancing around the proverbial bush: How do we bring the Diamondback more in line? Any argument you can make for the amby you can make for the diamondback that gives you crits for doing spy shit. At least the Frontier Justice requires you to destroy your own sentry for those crits.

I'm conflicted on the sandman. On one hand I hate stuns and anything that stops me from fighting back against the enemy (Except death of course) but on the other hand they gutted the weapon while keeping the biggest downside of -15 health.
I can't think of an alternative where I can still fight back but the scout actually has a tangible advantage over me. I suck at balance ideas. Also while we are talking about weapons: We should make it the cleaver crits on bleeding targets. Give us a reason to use the Wrap Assassin and give extra utility to the basher.

Well because it was the best option if the revolver was just a utility item to you and not something you actively focused on using. If you rely on your knife for the majority of kills then it's the best revolver in the game. Amby was great at putting yourself in less compromising positions and trying to assassinate important targets from range, If you made it work you could take out most classes in 2 shots, and you'd be far away enough to escape safely. Most people were shit with it, though. Compared to the knife which is very easy to get a pick with it but good luck surviving after that first stab against competent players.
I preferred the splendid screen, even without turn hacking. Get enough heads, and you can go around 1-shotting heavies with shield+crit combo.

In all honesty, sniper is brutally buttfucked by team play.
If two players coordinate an attack even on the best of snipers, he'll be fucked and at most take one of them, which is something that even works with spinbots to an extent.
The only way sniper could be nerfed would be through his shooting, and doing that would just disgust good sniper players away from the game, and get not so good snipers to become even less efficient.
Classes can rely on many aspects, whether it's the damage, the area denial potential, the movement etc, but sniper literally only has shooting, which is why it's ten times harder to nerf/buff sniper without totally changing the class than it is to modify a class like heavy or soldier.
They could've nerfed it to deal 2 damage and I'd still use it.

The lynchpin to the sniper is his headshot cooldown. All other attributes are secondary, at best.

The only realistically good way to nerf sniper is through his rate of fire.
Nerfing his mobility is stupid since he already has less mobility than any other class.
Nerfing his hp basically opens the door to getting one shot by a fuckload of things from shotgun meatshots to blast damage.
Nerfing his damage breaks the ability to one shot fully overhealed heavy, which is one of the primary design intents behind sniper
Nerfing his range (aka making sure he can't headshot under a certain radius) sounds really inconsistent and unfun, especially since it's so consequential
Which leaves us only with either melee damage, rate of fire, or something else which I didn't think of.
yeah in my absolute prime, pl_badwater was my go to for pubstomping and id honestly prevent the team ever pushing the cart very far. Didnt help the other team that I also had a team behind me. I think I had over 1,000 hours on Sniper alone, its just so much fucking work because its all about muscle memory and mastering flickshotting. I wouldnt be good enough though to carry as a sniper in actual competitive though.
that isnt the point anyone is making, the point is that no class has such a skill difference from a bad sniper, to a good sniper to a godly sniper, and a godly sniper seems almost OP, while a bad sniper is fucking useless, and a good sniper just carries his weight and feels fine.

Probably making it so headshots don't apply right after scoping and require a very small amount of charge, like 10%, for a headshot. Making it so you can't instant pop someone would likely be the best way to balance him. Maybe make it so headshot under that percentage is at least a mini crit. Otherwise, lowering his RoF and taking longer between shots.
Still I'd be hard pressed for anyone to accept nerfs to sniper because of how the player base views him, and how he's only picked situationally in comp play. TF2 competitive never did have a time to shine to really bring these kinds of things to light though. At the end I dont think he even needs to be nerfed per say.
Main issue with spy is he's much more dependant on the other team. Assuming you are against competent players, it's hard to make more then 1 pick before instantly getting outed and blown to shit, and people are very well aware of the dead ringer bullshit at that level too. That's the main thing holding back a godly spy, and probably the reason amby spy was so desired because he had range and could take out a key target and escape before the other team could reliably pick him.

Significantly less reserve ammo and slightly longer reloads. Only minicrits on headshot until it starts charging. Maybe a slight nerf to movement speed. In exchange buff SMG damage and replace the charge bar with a number.

This game was dead the moment they decided weapons shouldn't have passive effects. I like how Scout had so many side secondaries and melee weapons and now almost none of them are ever used anymore because stock covers all your bases. Pyro suffers the same problem on top of his nerfed flamethrower damage because the class specializing in close combat can't be good at his job or people will cry.
Why give us side options if we can't make use of them? Part of the game's fun, for me at least, was mixing shit together for the hell of it even if it wasn't wholly effective.
Spy is too reliant on other what people choose to do. You can't simply outplay everyone on skill alone. It's like sniper in it's unique mechanics, with the difference being that spy mechanics are easily countered by anybody on any class, if they're paranoid enough.

Pyro can't be good at close combat because the flamethrower takes no effort to use.
If you know where your left mouse button is you're instantly on the same level as every other pyro in terms of flamethrower use.
Straight DPS isn't the reason it was an upgrade. It was the slower firing speed. Accuracy drops off hard after the first shot, and you have to wait a while for it to return to normal. Enforcer was min-maxed against that. A slower attack speed also meant that it had to reload less often, and got higher damage per unit of ammo.
Which isn't to say the increased attack speed didn't have some uses, just that the higher damage per shot was almost always more valuable.

All this talk about "fixing" the sniper based on his amazing theoretical abilities, but you're ignoring how average he is in the actual, real game.
Pubs? You'll see Demos, Soldiers, Heavies, Medics, Scouts topscoring just as often as Sniper, and Snipers are usually hanging around the bottom of the scoreboard being dead weight.
Competitive high level play? Medic, Demo, Scout, Soldier are all higher priority classes than him which all get ran full-time, while Sniper is almost always a temporary choice.
Sure Sniper's great and can kill anything in the game in one shot from any range all the time in theory, but in practice, when played by actual humans, that doesn't happen anywhere near often enough to justify nerfing the class.

And sappers should be reworked. Clicking while crouching slides one forward, and will be a small ammo pack to everyone but the slider, and they can attach to buildings if they hit one. Sappers now have a charge meter, placing one has 2 second cooldown, sliding one has 4 second cooldown.
Now Spy has another utility in helping his team. Also it'd be fun, and that's what matters.
