the main appeal for me was the trails of gasoline you could make and set shit on fire.
it was some next level tech for me at the time I mean TS2 had it as well but you couldn't go as far with it and just the over the top crassness of it all.
later it became a funny stab at the times and as discussed with folks here the downtime moments and it's immersive sim like properties

Reaction to the first game, mostly. The arc that was the Jack Thompson saga all throughout the nineties and into the early 2000s effectively set Postal on a path to being an optionally ultraviolent Gary Coleman arson simulator, instead of an uncomfortable slaughtering simulator. It was already starting to change gears when the expansion packs came out, where Dude shoots up a Walmart spoof for not buying his game.
I do prefer the uncomfortable tone the first game had, but the second one is still great.
