So I've been enjoying my NES controller a whole bunch but I find it hard to know if they'll work with most titles. I thought maybe those of us that got the controllers could pool our knowledge and make a compatibility guide. I've bought a lot of games in the hopes they would be NES controller compatible so I'll get the ball rolling
good to go: NES app - obviously works, the only 'game' that allows you to navigate to the home map without needing another controller New Super Mario Bros U - works flawlessly and feels great Phantasy Star Sega Ages - works flawlessly and feels comfy (feels weird saying it feels great when the game doesn't require any reactive inputs). Needs to be mapped in settings. Outrun Sega Ages - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Sonic 1 Sega Ages - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Wargroove - works flawlessly and feels comfy (again, no reactive inputs) Capcom Beatemup Bundle - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Megaman Legacy Collection - works flawlessly and feels great. Cant remember if remapping required. Block-a-pix Deluxe - works flawlessly and feels comfy (no reactive inputs)
kind of works: Kirby Star Allies - works mostly, cant throw hearts as Kirby to create companions. Can press Y (not remappable unfortunately) on joycon without switching controllers as a workaround but not ideal. Would work well as a player 2-4 controller
shit list: Super Smash Bros - completely unplayable The Messenger - Not enough buttons, shame as the dpad movement and A and B as jump and attack felt great like Ninja Gaiden on NES GOD remastered - completely unplayable
Reaching limit, will continue list and if you're curious about a game I haven't listed yet then request info. I have a shit ton of games and might be able to help but if anyone else has a requested title and can do testing that would be great also. Hopefully someone finds this all helpful.
Question, works exclsively on switch or also on PC. Kind of hard to find a good nes controller without it shitting itself on super mario bros?
Thomas Robinson
bump, still working on the rest of the list

>New Super Mario Bros U - works flawlessly and feels great
FUCK
Looks like i'm buying NSMBU Deluxe even if the Wii U version is superior.

Didn't nintendo specifically say these are only used with NES games? Or did they actually say they will be compatible with other games later?

If you're looking for games to test or want to compile a list for others to test, I think SEGA AGES Alex Kidd, and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon are two games to try out off the top of my head. CotM should have just enough buttons, though I'm not sure if the nes controller has shoulder buttons, which the game would need for character switching, you'd also need to enable "command sub weapon" under options so you can use sub weapons with Up+B. Alex Kidd was a Master System game, whose controller had a near identical layout to the NES', so I see no reason why it would not work, though It might need to be button mapped like the other two sega ages games you posted about.

If they released SNES controllers I MIGHT bite

Interesting. Thanks OP
James Ortiz
sorry my router is fucking up atm
I haven't tried on PC yet, I would test this out for you but my computer is in transit as I moved country recently. All of my posts will be confirmed for NES only unfortunately. I've heard they work on PC but just from reading other users posts.
One small thing I might mention now I'm free of the character limit is that for spinjumps and stuff like making the squirrel suit get extra lift you need to use L or R which some people might be inclined to complain about. You can attach the joycon strab to the NES controller but it looks silly and I prefer the standard L and R buttons as there's less travel on the buttons themselves.
The NES app is the only product that *officially* supports the NES controllers but apparently the Switch recognises them as a pro controller outside the app allowing you to play a multitude of titles, it's just hard to tell what unless you own it. I don't think official support for other titles will happen but this is still pretty cool.
Both are in my next post but spoilers, they both work flawlessy (after remapping) for CotM I use A as jump, B as attack, L as sub weapon and R as change character right. There's some ????? marked blank inputs will they become required later on? If so it might affect the playability as you cant map the start and select buttons.

I really wanted these to work with Smash, I guess it's good I didn't buy them.
Jackson Garcia
Good job OP
Noah Lopez
Here's what the the complete button config menu looks like (spoilered just in case). Should still be manageable on an NES controller if both command inputs are on.
Okay, with the command inputs on that will work. I'll note that in the description, thank you.
Liam Foster
works on PC as a bluetooth controller. I don't remember if I even needed drivers
Christian Jenkins
Thanks OP, I don't suppose anyone has tried these with N++?
Christian Williams
OP here, don't own that title unfortunately.
unrelated question: Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many buttons does Cuphead uses? I'd love to be able to play it on the NES controller when it comes out, if it has enough buttons for all the inputs then that's half the battle.
Austin Gonzalez
Unless these NES controllers have shoulder buttons you arent going to be able to play cuphead on it
heres another batch of testing, takes a minute or two per game so please bare with me
good to go: Boodstained: Curse of the Moon - works nearly flawlessy (you need to use the command input options for sub weapon and dash i.e. up+B to subweapon) and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Sonic Mania - works flawlessly and feels great Golf Peaks - works flawless and feels comfy (no reactionary input) Night Trap 25th Anni. Ed.- works flawlessly and feels great ACA NEOGEO Twinkle Star Sprites - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Alex Kidd Sega Ages - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings. Thrash Rally - works flawlessly and feels great. Needs to be mapped in settings.
kind of works: Metal Slug Series - plays flawlessly for the most part but requires one too many buttons. You can assign the add credit button to X or Y and add credits with a joycon when you run out. Baba is You - plays well but you can't rewind your steps unless pressing Y on another controller. Rewinding steps isn't vital to my knowledge but is convenient.
shit list: Thimbleweed Park - completely unplayable Stardew Valley - unplayable Iconcoclasts - unmappable and default mappings are pretty terrible, might be missing some buttons too as not familiar with game
Joseph Gutierrez
Where can I get these? They don't sell them on Amazon.
Ryder Powell
I think most of these titles are e-shop exclusive as the sort of simple or retro/retro inspired games that work well with them don't usually get a full retail release.
Adam Russell
Is DKCTF playable with these?
Gavin Gray
Oh I'm a retard you mean the controllers lol. They're exclusively available to people who have a NES online membership through the nintnedo website which is gay as I think they're great.
Brody Myers
OP here, last batch of tests
good to go: Gekido Kintaro's Revenge - works flawlessly and feels great. (note: doesnt need mapping but some moron got the buttons messed up so L and R are ZL and ZR in the config menu) Windjammers: works flawlessly and feels great. The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa - works flawlessly and feels great.
kind of works Tetris 99 - works well when you're just playing tetris and feels great but you cant adjust your targeting of other players
shit list: Golf Story - completely fails to recognise the controller inputs so you cant get past the start screen Flashback - unplayable, too many buttons
becuase tetris almost worked I'm downloading the demo of puyo puyo tetris to test that out, will be my last result unless I see another request I can fulfil
I played that on WiiU so never got the switch version and there's no demo or I'd test for you.
Noah Gonzalez
Bump
Mason Jenkins
okay just played a bit of the demo and looked at the controls and puyo puyo tetris is good to go. works flawlessly and feels great, no mapping required.
thats it from me for today unless someone requests something I happen to own
Asher Taylor
Bless your efforts, OP. This is a nice idea for a thread, would love to see it continue.
Connor Stewart
I've saved it all in a google doc, might make a nice infographic out of it later and post in switch threads here and there with hopes to expand it.
Dylan Adams
Comfy thread of next to no shitposts. OP was not a faggot today.
Austin Thompson
Pretty sure it works with any game, the only issue is the number of buttons.
I know the website Nintendolife has been trying various games with it.
Parker Diaz
Godspeed OP
Brayden Lewis
Is the NES controller compatible with Tetris 99?
Andrew Campbell
from kind of works: Tetris 99 - works well when you're just playing tetris and feels great but you cant adjust your targeting of other players (requires use of the sticks)
