Why is everyone praising this game

Its alright 7/10 at best

Attached: 220px-Planescape-torment-box.jpg (220x273, 27K)

No one talks about this game. U might see it on some top 100 games of all time list but that's about it

a 90s 7/10 is like a current day 17/10

Story, characters, dialogue, c&c, reactivity, ROLEplaying.

Its because its writing is first year philosophy class tier and that makes it better than 99% of videogame stories.

actually it's, at most, a 4/10 for its horrid combat and garbage quest design. The fetch quest to get to Ravel is one of the worst things I've ever had to do in a video game. Story is largely literally ripped from DnD. P:T is a contender for most overrated game of all time, then again no one but 30+ year old fatasses who flame jRPG threads give a shit about this game anymore.

>roleplaying
>can only play the game as a mage or you get a shittier experience
>can't choose the role of your party members

because it excels at something

elor si ssalc

class is largely part of role, yes. Outside of that, I guess you have 2 choices, Avelone's patented asshole or goody two shoes

dumb xenoblade aficionado

The gameplay is flat out horrid, but the story is the probably the only video game story out there that's good enough quality to compare itself to novel or film (even if its just a no name paperback or a B movie).

It was the first ludo and its one of the best games of all time.

Most of you faggots never actually played it. Best proof? 90% of people talking about it "in depth" think that "You go to Hell." is actually the most positive ending to the game.

>people talk shit about Torment's gameplay
>despite the fact that it's the exact same as Baldur's Gate 1/2 with a few cooler spells

Also the Planescape setting is painfully underused. Forgotten Realms gets way too much credit and attention.

Class can be a limiting factor when deciding on a characters role. Not to mention that more often than not it determines possible COMBAT roles. I wonder why everything boils down to fucking combat when it comes to CRPG discussions pertaining to roles in role-playing.

Story is one of the best in an RPG, storytelling is THE best of ANY game, writing is among the best of any game, gameplay is mediocre if not outright below average.

Overall quality depends on how much you want to play a storytelling based game.

baldur's gate sucks

>roleplaying for gameplay doesn't matter in a video game

baldurs gate actually had some thought put into encounter design

Considering that the only other distinguishable ending is "you go back to your amnesiac existence, forgetting more and more every time you die", release doesn't look all that bad.

It does, but if it's the only thing that matters in a game whose genre supposedly allows multiple solutions to overcome obstacles/progress in general, then you just might have a deeply ingrained, systemic problem.

And here's another proof that you never played the game, retard. The Practical Incarnation has performer a ritual which would cause the third incarnation down the line to stop losing his memories. That incarnation is you, which is why the Practical Incarnation had to scheme to get you into the Fortress of Regrets, where in turn he could take over.

And no, there are more unique endings. You really should play the game.

I dunno, willing yourself out of existence is pretty cool

>in the mortuary
>morte says to help him find a body
>spend an hour looking for his body
>turns out he was just joking
this shit game needs quest markers

No, the "punchline" comes if you are dumb enough to take off the head of one of those skeletal guardians. You know, the giant ones.

>And here's another proof that you never played the game, retard.
I see this mentality getting more and more popular lately. Just because someone doesn't remember something from 20 fucking years ago, or didn't get every possible ending due to how he played, or has an opinion that disagrees with yours doesn't mean he didn't play the game. Also, you forgot your ebin le zoomer maymay. Would go perfectly with your mature behavior.

At least I'm not lying about playing a game, which is so much more childish.

desu a lot of shit can go over your head on the first playthrough, like, I completely missed Vhailor and only got Nordom because I knew about him beforehand

I agree, but this is one of the most important revelation throughout the entire game, and the one that makes the "not going to Hell" options actually make sense.

then at that point who would TNO even bother, unless he canonically doesn't die once throughout the story

The planes confuse the shit out of me. How are these places like Limbo attached to a big disc? So weird.

Oh, I don't know, maybe because FUCKING LIVING SHADOWS ARE HUNTING HIM constantly and killing people around him. I believe that is a good reason, for once.

Sometimes you have to man up and take your punishment.

I'm not entirely sure. The Baldur's Gate series has a better story, and the combat is actually good.

updated my journal

>The Baldur's Gate series has a better story
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOO

>Baldur's gate series has a better story

BG series are my favourite games of all time but nope, PST story is king among all vidya, but BGs gameplay is way fucking better and you don't get gimped if you aren't pumping mental stats like pst

Sometimes I dream about a remake of this with actual good gameplay. No changing anything, they have all the story, they would just have to update visuals and mechanics. I know, however, this would still be a lot of work with no guaranteed return.

I'm playing this game for the first time and I've become a mage which according to this thread was a good decision but why is that? Are the other classes not viable? Also can you multiclass in this? I see this Limbo swordsman guy is multiclassed.

because stats give you conversation options, and that's what you're playing the game for: the writing

mage is the best way to experience the story due to the wis/int stat. On top of that, it slightly alleviates the absolute braindead combat a bit with spells

I know the EE didn't change the story or anything in any way but aside from the fixes did they balance anything so you don't have to play mage?

because all the conversation options come from int, wis and cha which fucking suck on fighters and thieves

I miss the feeling of this game, nothing nowadays does it as good.
Baldur's Gate was great too.
What else can you recommend me bros?

On top of what everyone else said, high level spells are cool as fuck and were inspired by FF7's summons

>inspired by FF7's summons
Really? I can't wait to see that then.

NWN 2 and NWN 2 Mask of the Betrayer

Latter much better than former but former gets a bad rep when its actually pretty good, I also really enjoyed pillars of eternity

The Icewind Dale games are pretty cozy.

So can you multiclass, though? Is it just not worth it here? I might restart because outside of INT, I put points into STR because I planned on being a fighter/mage like my Baldur's Gate guy. It looks like I should have used INT and WIS, maybe CHA. I don't want to power game or anything but I don't want a complete shitter either.

you may as well ignore the stats that arn't int/wis/cha

ehh

played those as well, fug

>ROLEplaying.
Either everyone in the DnD universe is dumb as a rock, or the game didn't let you roleplay someone with 25 INT and WIS.

I haven't played them yet myself, but I hear good things about the Dark Sun games. I'm going to play those after I complete Planescape.

Have you tried doing a mod playthrough on any of these? The Baldur's Gate games have a pretty extensive modding community, and they make the series play a lot better, particularly the Gibberlings3 mods/sword coast stratagems.
