I think if you write a romance well and in a way that it's clear that the characters really fit to each other and need each other to grow, I think people would be accepting it more. Some people will always says that gay romances are "forced", but I believe it's not just that. I think they are usually just not written well and it just seems unreasonable for them to be a couple, gay or not.
The same applies to the majority of straight couples in vidya stories but people obviously don't really notice that as much. A badly written straight romance can be easily shrugged off, while a badly written gay romance sticks out like an eyesore.
I think there is just not many emotionally intelligent writers who have experienced deep same-sex relationships.

Many shippers (not all, by all means, but many) are extremely autistic about canon. They see the tiniest, most vague hints that two character like each other as proof for their ship. That has been happening since shipping was a thing and is prevelent in every medium where shipping is possibe.
But even the opposite exists. There are even autists who try to do the opposite - search for "proof" that the characters would never start a relationship with the other for one reason or another.
When these two groups of people clash, that's where the real autism starts. It's beyond ridiculous.
I speak from personal experience. I'm into one ship where many people claim that they are canonically "totally in love" and where others are convinced that their relationship is supposed to be family-like and are utterly disgusted of the mere idea of them being romantic with each other. Both of them pick up bullshit cues and paint them as "proof" and have endless autistic catfights that overshadow console wars on Yea Forums by a large margin in terms of autism levels.
Fuck man I'm so tired of it. I don't understand why it's so hard to understand what canon actually means and to accept that their shipping is just headcanon. Even if it's losely based on the canon. It's such an easy distinction.

Yeah absolutely. I don't even care what kind of headcanons people have, it could be the most crazy ass bullshit a human being can come up with - as long they recognize it as headcanon and don't try to fucking convince everyone else that it's a fact.
Autists who try to force any sort of canon are a fucking plague.
I fucking know the characters are just friends in the game but that doesn't stop me from coming up with stories that would make them go beyond that, for example. That's where the fucking fun is: build something that fits to the canon narration, but is clearly not supposed to be a part of it. It's really not hard to seperate that so what the fuck.

Agreed, that's the approach I'd like to see. I don't mind people coming up with their headcanons. I know they won't affect me or the games themselves despite of course my disapproval of it as shown above in the thread. When I'd say something that contrasts to the popular belief, like "I strictly believe Bayo and Jeanne are just friends" in such a community I'd get fucked. So this is the path I'd like people to take.
