The sense of design in the Super Mario Bros movie is unironically more inspired and original than anything in the grand majority of dysopian movies in the past decade and a half.

It's funny how the Mario Bros' personalities are the exact opposite of their future canon personalities. Luigi's the brave one jumping head-first into adventure, Mario's the coward who has to be almost literally dragged into the quest. Plus Luigi has an active interest in the supernatural and paranormal, which is particularly ironic considering what Luigi's greatest fear is in the games.

Lmao at people defending the Mario movie. The production was a complete shit show that never knew what they wanted to do. Forcing this dystopian times square shit into Mario was a travesty, literally just trying to coast off more popular shit like bladerunner and pretty much how everything had to be forced edgy and sarcastic in the 99s. The script got rewritten a ton of times, kept switching directors who kept trying to flipflop what was already changed. Bob Hoskins basically gave up and spent the entire time wasted.

Not to say I dont like the movie or its aesthetic, but pretty much every other video game movie ever did a better job. I think Detective Pikachu looks great, there is nothing wrong with the realistic mon designs. My only complaint is that it will probably end on a cliffhanger like the game even though it is so painfully obvious pikachu is the kids missing dad.

The Mario movie was fucking awful with more script changes than a bad sitcom, no focus, shit acting, and atrocious characterization. The only reason people are suddenly pretending it's good now is because everyone has loved to hate it for so many years, so they want to go against the grain.

Nope. As a kid I saw nothing wrong with it.
Of course as I've grown up I've noticed that the script and the writing isn't good but apart from that I never saw it as this catastrophic tragedy that people make it up to be.
It's always just been 'not good' as opposed to "HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S THE WORSE MOVIE EVER AAAAAAAH".
There have been worse movies, trust me, this one just pulls in a crowd of people who don't know better, being a video game adaptation and all.

i think it's just best to give an explanation instead of shitposting. The movie has a legendarily bad production. The directors did not give a fuck about the franchise and was just using this project to bolster their career. Mutiple writers were fired that even dared to try to make it more like a fantasy movie. Nintendo didn't have much creative control and just wanted it to make money and spread brand awareness. In short the inmates were running the asylum and this is what we got. The directors never did another movie ever again because of how much a box office bomb it was. The movie was supposed to draw in the kids since they were the target audience for nintendo but they were scared of the monster designs and the confusing/unfamiliar story. Doesn't help that it was strangely adult at times.

tl;dr it was inaccurate and weird therefore it failed.

Don't worry, Sanic will bring back horribly inaccurate adaptations.

Admittedly, it is fun to watch if only because of how flat-out weird it is compared to everything else in the franchise. It's beyond Americanization, it loops back around to being a work of art in terms of adaptations with just how different it is.
