Erdrick started to appear once a SE character stopped being impossible, all the way back to Cloud's reveal you see whispers of his name. Of course, with how ignorant and young the Smash fanbase is, an older title like DQ would be second place to Sora, 2B, Sams and Shrek
Furthermore, its natural that when a character gets something going for them fans of those series start to show up. I am not constantly begging for Maxwell or Jack (Harvest Moon) but if their names had credible leaks I would be hyped because I do like those characters. Not all fanbases have nothing else to look forward to except their characters being included in Smash.
Even back then, Dragon Quest really wasn't that revolutionary. It definitely did stand out thanks to its art style, but then again, you might as well say the same for Chrono Trigger, which came much later. Akira Toryiama really was on fire on that era and back then, Dragon Ball really was a hit as well.

Even if it did, the game wasn't THAT well received right at the beginning. It did a pretty good job solidifying further jRPGs down the line though, that's what it was actually good for in the first place, but as the original original game? It's okayish. Not terribly bad nor extraordinary, just okayish. That's why DQ3 is even popular to begin with, although you can thank DQ for DQ3 to even exist in the first place. Every franchise has to start somewhere. It is important in the sense of being a historical help for development of games that followed.

You have no idea what you are talking about. DQ's greatest achievements were its UI and its integration between Overworld and Village. DQ3 in itself is a landmark in terms of how much content it has, RPGs before it, including DQ itself, felt more like 'games' than JRPGs, DQ3 is the first one to really feel like what we know as a JRPG, from the storyline and villager dialogue to the silly crap like an unlockable bikini outfit for the female characters.
Though yes, the art design and music was great, in the same period FF1 was released with battle music that didn't change between the first fight and the final boss, DQ3 had its Final Boss have two, increasingly more epic sounding, themes.
And that is not even counting the random shit DQ invented along the way that somehow stuck, every HM puzzle in pokemon, pokemon natures were DQ3's SNES remake party member personalities, even the street pass was based on the DS DQ games, especially DQ9, which also happens to be the best selling third party in that system.

The main reason I wouldn't trust Erdrick to make it in Smash was the absolutely anemic treatment Cloud got when he got in. No spirits, no music, only himself and a stage. Not even his original render for the Fighter Spirit. They didn't give that much when he was DLC for 4 either. If they're going to be that defensive of their IPs there's no chance they will meet up with what Nintendo said they would give for each DLC. Frankly, since it's Nintendo themselves doing it, my guess is that not all the DLC spots will be third parties, and in fact Joker may be the only one. And before I get called a >___fag, I'm actually a Travisfag but he got deconfirmed by Suda himself, so I've resigned myself.

Because Brave techincally is a codename, but it's the laziest and most ovbious of them all, it's clear Nintendo still hasn't realized that their online games will get datamined from day 1.
