Japanese games were always popular, they just messed up badly in the transition to the PS3/360, since they had little experience developing high end games for computers, compared to Western devs and also were used to make a new engine for each game and tried to keep that up at a point where it just became a problem rather than an advantage.

However, people looked at that as a one way bridge and as a sign that the West would always be ahead of Japanese development.

Western developers also mosty imploded while chasing the AAA dream. You can see that nowadays we have less publishers competing in the AAA space and also less middle sized developers. For the West, it's mostly the few remaining AAA publishers and then indies.

Gaming is more popular now. Jap games are still niche but there exists more localizers so more of them come over. As gaming changed from a hobbyist activity into culturally acceptable, people learned from osmosis and either accepted another culture or are currently trying to change it.

Japanese games are smalltime if you actually think Japan is fascinating. Yes, Japanese games can have some sweet themes and characters but they're games so in the end you sit around for hours pushing buttons for something repetitive to happen. Read (translated of course, no reason to get crazy about it) contemporary Japanese literature instead.
