Roadside Picnic. The anomalies in the STALKER books behave approximately the same way as in the games. In Roadside Picnic it's like, you accidentally touched a thin spider web like line and you've already lost your arm or died to some bullshit. It's cool and suspense keeping in the books, but it would translate to vidya very poorly.

Were they ever mentioned where they were? If I recall correctly, it was never mentioned where any of the Zones are, even the one where the book takes place. It's just hints and speculation that people say it's Canada, which it most likely is, but the book never outright states it.

What I read was a Bulgarian translation, but it was so long ago that I'm maybe 30% sure of the Labrador part. Now that I think about it, I read John Wyndham's The Chrysalids around the same time and that was almost certainly set in a post-apocalyptic Labrador.
