SoS isn't much harder than DH, and you'll have the added benefit of having a bigger movepool plus the NG+ goodies. You'll breeze through it. Consider SoS as another run to really familiarize yourself with how things work.

Shadow moves to the target you're locked on to, but if you're too far away, he'll try to teleport back to you. You can call him to your position by using the side dodge (and griffon with back dodge or double jump), and you can send him toward enemies quicker with his stinger-type move. Directional inputs are relative to V's facing, not Shadow's, same for Griffon.

If you don't have him dodge he'll get stalemated pretty quickly against more powerful enemies. Shadow being alive makes your side dodge better, and you can also consider that a dodge for Shadow. Use it to get him out of trouble even if V himself isn't going to get hit. You want to stay somewhat close to where Shadow is fighting for this to be effective, otherwise every time you try to make him dodge you'll pull him far away from his target and he'll have to run back.

Side dodge will move Shadow out of harm's way. Shadow will move to the nearest enemy and attack on command. Lock-on will have him teleport to that enemy if he isn't there at the moment. Shadow won't stray too far from your position, so if you want him to attack an enemy that's far away, you'll have to move a little closer.

Not any of those anons but I had absolutely no trouble getting S ranks on every Human mission first try even as V. Really don't know what that user's issue is

6'2/190 cm was Dante's height in one of the concept arts for the DMC anime which showed all the characters standing side by side (Lady, Morrison, Patty, Trish etc). But other than that his height has never been stated. The anime is canon overall of course but not necessarily every little detail (cough Morrison cough). The IRL statue of Nero is 6'2 so that's the closest thing we have to canon lol. That means V's tall as fuck since if he wasn't hunched over he'd be a bit taller than Dante. Streak does the most damage, not only raw, but also because you can fit a lot of bringer knuckles in during the move. Next would be Calibur and Shuffle, which have the advantage of doing all their damage in one spot. Some(?) DT'd enemies can resist being carried by EX Streak so it wouldn't be the most damaging option in those situations.

At least below floor 80 it works pretty well if you teleport right as they do. It throws them off for some reason

It's a hard mission to get style on in general but you're also getting trolled by the first Griffon fight. After the first Griffon fight is over you're still in combat after the cutscene because of the nearby empusa. You need to farm them fast for style, honeycomb and dance macabre are great.

If you try to "skip" them it tanks your style hard. As well as if you don't immediately get your style up on them after the cutscene.

In general the mission is fucked for getting high style on though. Griffon is easy enough to deal with but Shadow can be a fucking asshole and there aren't enough good fights to build style from encounters.

Press the stick in other directions during twosome time, you can aim one of the guns in other directions to shoot at two enemies at the same time. That's the point of the move. Honeycomb fire is just dps

I think the empusa are only part of the griffon encounter if you're close to them when he flies off. I usually finish that fight at the opposite end of the arena and it considers the battle over and tells me my score.

if you're doing well but you keep dying at like, floor 95, it's acceptable to cheese through with the Super Costume, but you should go back in Warm Up mode and beat each individual floor without the Super Costume after you do.

It's one thing to be unable to progress, it's another to not feel like starting over and repeating 97 fucking levels before you get to the part you were struggling with.

This is one thing I actually feel was better in Bayonetta; getting max ranking involved killing everything, even the optional stuff. DMC5 actually punishes you for that, your best bet is to engage in zero optional combat because all it does is drag your rank down.

Not that Bayonetta didn't have its own faults, but it still feels like DMC5 should have used an additive style points system and just given each stage a separate points grade, rather than making it an average so shooting a single Qliphoth root enemy torpedoed your running score.

While what you are saying is true, qliphoth roots don't tank your style. They're overbalanced, in fact. If you can kill Qliphoph roots while you're on a high style ranking it basically straps a rocket to your style points. If you kill them when you're on low/no style it essentially does nothing.

Exactly. They removed the shenanigans and nonsense from the level rank, but by going fight-average it encourages fighting as little as you can. It also means that fights aren't really weighted; if you can maintain an SSS rank a room full of a dozen Antenoras and a Judecca, that's weighted against your topped-out-at-A rank fight against 2 Hell Cainas in the first room.

That would devalue the EX taunts.

Rawhide is easy-modo parry if you can even sorta-kinda see the window coming, useful for Vergil and Furies both. You can do a meme build with 3 Overtures and stack the Break Ages into him in the beginning to shit out damage he can't avoid. Also Buster Arm is the most OP single-target damage-dealer in the game.

They aren't that situational. It's a lot of free style points against any encounter that only has/starts with weak enemies like caina and empusa.

Hitting an enemy and killing an enemy adds an amount to the style points, and how much gets added is more the higher your Style is.
So killing easy shit like roots at SSS will give you an easy boost at pretty much no cost or thought

The way encounters are structured in DMC5, you know perfectly well that you're skipping one. Nobody accidentally didn't realize that when they triple-jump-air-taunt chained Nero over that giant gap, they were bypassing a large encounter.

That's only true if the roots are there as a part of an existing combat encounter though. There are plenty of times when the roots just pop up out of the ground far enough from a fight that the game is treating it as a new encounter, and your hope of ever building any sort of style against them is minimal. But as soon as you strike them, you're creating a combat encounter that affects the average, so your 5 previous 3900 style point fights get weighted down by this one 800-point D-rank 6-shot affair. Whereas if you just run past them, they don't generate an encounter value, and your average is unaffected.

I don't know how it works exactly. But if I had to guess, they put the style points you get from roots on steroids, probably because they expect you to just kill them for green/white orbs and not in actual encounters. You're generally not supposed to run into them in actual encounters, so if you manage to chain them into an encounter the points get multiplied like crazy.

I agree with the idea of a perfect score involving doing 100% of the level (or at least having a remarkable bonus for doing 100% if that's not the main requirement), but platinum's way of hiding secrets in levels is the most indefensible bullshit.

There's a secret in W101 where you literally go to the start of the final boss's level, inch as close to the cutscene trigger for starting the fight as possible, then rocket jump high enough to make the floor go off screen, then when you land there will be an item that wasn't there before. That's platinum secrets in a nutshell.

Unless you are buying from someone making it to your exact tailored measurements it is a very bad idea.

There are still multiple missions that will fuck you in the butt if you do it this way (Mission 10 being a prime example), which is what's unfortunate. Because the mission rank system should ideally be balanced in such a way that beating up everything you encounter is a better strategy than ignoring it.

diverging paths with dante. after a few room encounters look for a big ledge/hole in the wall on your way down (it's only a few jumps down and across from a spot where you can land) go through it and you should find another little hole in the side of the wallon your way down from the other hole. jump over there and you should find it.

When you stun vergil plant all 3 overtures then buster break age and hit DT at the end of the throw to blow them up. Use the ragtime break age to showdown Vergil. Then one more buster break age on a stun or the dive should be plenty.

Gerbera is there if you fuck up

If its like DMC3 Vergil then a specific number of hits, but certain weapon attacks can add more to the retaliation counter than others.

All enemies have a flinch value that needs to be hit before they can be knocked back or launched and different attacks have different flinch values.
On DH to SoS they're pretty low and easy to hit for the most part so it's not too much to worry about beyond heavyweights like Nobodies or Proto Angelos.
When an enemy goes DT this flinch value gets boosted alongside their HP and damage

Training mode. Not possible in actual missions/BP.

you can also skip the small crumbling floor section in mission 2 where you first encounter Hell Antenora, where you use a nidhogg hatchling

Yep. Do that every time too, mostly because I hate that fight (too cramped, bad camera).

I think there are actually other skips as well that I use, I don't recall them all off the top of my head, but Nero's Diverging Point certainly has a lot of segments you can platform past.

I do know that I was able to clear the entirety of the Punch Line Surfing challenge for a blue orb without using Punch Line by exploiting this.

The intent is that you juggle the enemies, because if you keep them off the ground for a large enough percentage of the fight then the ground won't collapse and you can just wall-hop up.

Punch line surfing has several mechanics I didn't fully understand until trying this challenge, and understanding them makes it much clearer why it's structured the way it is.

>Punch line's speed from the boost move accumulates, and translates into jump distance
>Punch line surfing's countdown timer is suspended if you jump off and let it hit an enemy, it only counts down if Nero is riding it
>Punch line surfing's countdown timer is longer the higher your Style Rank.
>Punch line surfing resets your jump counter like an enemy step

You're supposed to style on the enemies before surfing, hop off briefly to buff style and hop back on, and use as many opportunities as possible to get off the arm, jump/glide, and get back on to minimize the countdown.

I just jump-cheesed past every single ramp until the very end and used a single punch line shot to ride the last little slope up.

I wouldn't fully agree,
1)I wouldn't even count Lady as a character in 4, she's just a part of a post-credits cutscene.

2)Trish is not that important, I agree, but they did use her as a trigger of the whole chain of events off-screen. But these games since 3 kinda do have a problem with female characters being useless.

3) I don't think Dante in 4 is 'shoved in' in a narrative sense. He's the one who allows Nero to hold a Yamato, basically tests him as a reliable ally, and their whole chemistry is quite compelling and makes sense.

Unconvinced. after S-ranking it on DMD I don't think doing it no damage on SoS enemies is overly difficult. But we'll see. 8 was the worst so far. 10 wasn't too bad when I started dropping meteors on the Judeccas at the start of fights and 12 was easy after I watched this.

8 is the only mission where you HAVE to use the optional encounters to gain style points. Fighting the Empusas on the falling platform along with the Behemoth gives you a shit ton on style points. I only S-Ranked mission 10 because I got lucky with the No-Hit run when the Fury died to the exploding Hellbat. Mission 12 was complete aids. I somehow managed the no-hit run after countless attempts. Fuck being in SDT during the beginning of the Urizen fight. Mission 18 is the only mission I cheesed with the Faust Hat. Fuck Griffon's bullshit dive attack.
