When Dead Space was announced, people were saying it was a knockoff of Doom 3. I still see people compare it to Doom. Really, all Dead Space changes is the camera and an emphasis on limb removal. This game doesn't seem to feature limb removal as a mechanic since he just spams a machine gun in the demo. The screaming while taking damage and while stomping already feels a lot more frantic than Issac's muted yelps.

It was obvious it was supposed to end in a completely different way, if only because you learn of Isaac's survival after the main game's credits, not the DLC; and then there's Lexine's story being straight up dropped. They probably knew Dead Space would die before doing the DLC and they wrapped things up as they could, but it wasn't their planned ending

RE4 has better environments, bosses and weapons than Dead Space but the experience is tainted by the controls every step of the way.

To be fair, I never completed RE4 upon initial release. I had it on PS2 but my PS2 broke while I was still in the village area. I eventually went back to it after already having played Dead Space and Dead Space 2 and I couldn't get over the controls for the entirety of the game. It's not just the stopping to aim thing, it's the fact that you can't strafe and turning the analog stick makes you turn around instead. I never got used to it, it felt clunky all the way through. I appreciate what RE4 did for games that followed, but I really couldn't even give it another playthrough.

The setting so far is generic spaceship. You can't really see the rifle but it looks like generic marine gun. The enemies look like infected humans instead of grotesque masses of flesh and bone. Even the suit looks different enough from Isaac's, what with the helmet and all. The closest to straight up Dead Space it gets is the swearing while stomping, and even that isn't copyrighted. Again, it's a blatant copycat without originality, but not lawsuit worth it, it seems.

As I said, to get a game into a functional enough state that you can show off a gameplay teaser within 5 months does require talent and motivation. However I do agree with the sentiment of others that this is a blatant, shameless rip off of DEED SPAPS. But is that a bad thing? If this game gets financial backing and support, and scope creep sets in it could easily become its own thing. And if this is what the game is like after just 5 months then it'd be interesting to see how it's evolved in a year's time.

The dismemberment is such a key aspect of Dead Space that if they were going to copy it, I think it'd be a part of early builds too. It would make no sense to show off your progress without such a key feature if you were actually planning to implement it. Who knows though, it's an indieshit game so none of the normal rules apply.

Because even though game mechanics or HUD or the setting can't be copyrighted, other things can be. Names including the title, enemies, friendly characters etc., models of any NPC or location, music to name a few. Also the game engine itself is a whole other topic since we're talking 1:1 copy. You can't make a 1:1 copy but you can "steal" any actual mechanic as you please.

Not only was this far too early to be releasing previews for but what you did show looks like a chinese phone game ripoff of dead space. If you're going for as close to the feel of dead space as possible then you're also going to need to take inspiration from what set that game apart. As it stands it just looks like you've soullessly ripped, copied, or recreated assets and rebuilt them to match the "feeling" of the first dead space game, albeit at a very early stage, but have only managed to capture the "look". It's forced, artificial, and bland, and it kills all interest anyone may have had in a "fanmade spiritual successor to dead space".

45 minutes is me being optimistically generous, those games are usually shitty endless runners or jrpg style games using pre existing graphics. Of course you can make a 45 long game if you just write a script to spawn enemies until you reach a certain point. And as I said, 3d games produced in game jams largely use pre existing models and textures and obviously would be on the same level as shitty steam direct asset flips if they were ever actually sold. If you wanted to compare a 4 minute demo to those game jam creations, they could easily stretch that demo out to be the same length as any of those by having a seemingly infinite hallway with enemies spawning on a loop, but that isn't the point of the video and you know it isn't. It isn't to show that they can make a game, but rather to show a verticle slice of how the game will play once its released.
