Not gonna lie, the gameplay and exploration look repetitive as hell. Maybe the person playing sucked, but backtracking seems annoying with all the extra moves you have to do and the gameplay looks like Paper Mario but you mash buttons even moreso.

That kinda sucks. A VP battle system without a sweet cinematic payoff is as absurd as a DBZ fighting game without planet exploding attacks. I would've preferred a simpler battle system in that case, because why the fuck do I care about building a big combo if all I've got to show for it at the end is big numbers and a lower enemy health bar?

It's inspired by VP. It's not literally trying to be it.
The supers in Indivisible are just metered skills that have a variety of effects and they're not separate from the game play. You can combo into, during, and after them.
They're not just a 25 second long cutscene you get that ends with someone shouting maleficent harm because you did some big enough combos.

You're misreading the post. There's no risk in performing the move. Once you've done enough to start it up, you can just put the controller down which is very boring design.

This game is undeniably amazing. How can they have such brilliant designs contrasted by total shit in others? Just how do they do it? I know they simplified character design for animation sake, so why bother with 2D? It's all very pretty, and yet nothing is worth more than a glance.

Why exactly can't we have both then? A versatile expansion of the battle system which still leads to the cinematic finishers that we all know and love? Why does it have to be one or the other? Just because you've made the road to the finisher more complicated and more "fun" (?) doesn't mean that they need to be replaced with lackluster attacks. I know the excuse is that it would take way too long to animate, but I just want to hear someone say it and admit that it's not as wowing as VP instead of coming up with excuses.

You want to just watch a cool animation play out, and I'm too interested in the game part of this video game to want that. I prefer DMC to Asura's Wrath. And Lab Zero seems to be firmly planted in the reasonable game side of this argument. Not surprising since they come from the most gamey genre of all, fighting game.

You're missing my entire point. Why use VP's battle system if you aren't going to offer the ONE thing people loved about it? If you don't want zero interaction, cool animations to finish off your big combo then use a different battle system. The payoff was the entire point behind it. Without the payoff, what's the point? You could reach the same conclusion with a regular turn-based battle system that would probably offer you way more strategic options, or fuck it just go straight action if you want it so bad.

Indivisible is trying to be a more technical and skillful display of the concept of the valkyrie profile concept and long cinematic finishes aren't supportive of that.
VP and similar games (endless frontier, namco x capcom, et cetera) are mostly about flash, have fairly low execution, and are pretty much just an extended combo video in rpg format. Indivisible isn't that and it doesn't want to be that.

Then they chose the wrong battle system. The only reason VP's battle system was so engaging was because you were racing against the clock to rack up those numbers for the big payoff. It doesn't matter how they expand on it, you're meant to be racing against the clock for something and in this case that "something" isn't that impressive. If they wanted action, they should've gone action. If they wanted full on strategy they should've gone turn based. They chose the worst possible battle system for what they're apparently trying to do.

VP and Indivisible are only similar conceptually. The combat is extremely different once you actually get your hands on it since the only thing they lifted from it was inspiration.
You should probably check out project x zone and its sequel like the user below you mentioned if you want something more closer to VP. It's definitely a game about racking up big numbers and doing flashy attacks.

Yeah Valentine wasn't touched. That was the issue. Every character after Filia and Bella was handled differently on knockout frames than Filia and Bella, and that detail had been bothering the artists for a while.

The designs before hand would have been much more time consuming considering the layers of drapery, adorned accessories, long hair, ect. I'm not one for conjecture, but I'd assume that all of the above would be plenty of reasons for them to simplify the designs in order to make the entire process less painful for the artists on the team, especially since they hand draw EVERY FUCKING FRAME and is confirmed to adhere to the 60 fps standard they set in Skullgirls.

The official reason a Vasco got for his change into Latigo was that they didn’t feel his whole Conquistador Cowboy look was very coherent with everything else. Alex Ahad still wanted to put a cowboy in the game, though, so the compromise created Latigo.

To say that the reason this happened was transparently SJW is a bit of a reach. Of course, there was no reason not to design another white character, but there was no reason not to design a black one, either. Personally, if I were to put a black character in the game, I’d put in an expy of Yasuke, and I certainly wouldn’t give him a dumb fucking gunsword because I hate gunswords. But that’s just me, Lab Zero can do what they want.

VP's finishing strikes got old FAST especially when you were doing four of them each turn.

From where I'm, standing Indivisible seems to lack focus, or perhaps cohesion, in that its trying to be a metroid-vania while juggling its more in-depth 'VP combat but with some fighting game embellishments' thing. In practice, I don't feel that the two parts really gel into a whole, as things are now. The jarring ass way combat starts kinda bugs me, for instance. Like, I get that they are going for a seamless thing that allowed for preemptive attacks, but god does there need to be a transition of sorts. Off the top of my head, they could maybe do a big time stop/slow down with some effects while whats-her-face does a "TO MY SIDE MY NOBLE EINHERJAR," then the party pops outta her ass and time and the effects resume and the enemy is still in its stun state. The only problem then would be when the enemy gets your ass first, but if that's they case, then they could probably just do a similar slowdown and have the goons get launched out of he by the attack or something. Like, entering and leaving fights could use a lot more punch than they currently have.

To be fair, Latigo was originally going to be named Vasco, but the devs saw people didn't care for the change/didn't seem close enough to the original design to warrant carrying the name, so they met people halfway and changed the name and apparently the original Vasco is still going to be around, but as an NPC.

VP's combat was a mess of half baked ideas that didn't work together at all. Some designer evidently had a lot of fun making the combo system, and it works, but the rest of the mechanics don't support it and frankly make it obsolete. You get the same performance by mashing all your buttons, and it's all pointless because angel curios and auto union plume make sure you never die.

People are losing sight as to why the character designs and overall visual style irks people. Also this idea of homogenizing doesn't seem to work when the actual animation of the game now is so low effort and so undynamic versus what they originally showed off. I would be pretty peeved if I actually funded the project on the premise they showed off originally and it ended up looking this show and bad.

Parts of Old Antoine's personality also seemed to be given to Latigo, while New Antoine looks more cocky and less proper. Maybe that was going be another character's personality at first.

Dude, Skullgirls is dead as a doorknob now as far as popular fighting games go. 2nd Encore was its last hurrah. It doesn't mean that the views are negative overall out there, that is what I mean, plenty of games got development hell and once they got out, they got attention back.

Each character is assigned to a button
You attack with each character by doing inputs+their button
You also block and break throws for that specific character by pressing/holding their button during defense phases.

I've played these demos quite a lot dude. Outside of slight pauses added in and out of battle to show XP HUD, it's not slower. The character animations are handled the same as they've always been handled since the first build. Battle speed is faster too, turns happen much faster, characters move to attack point faster, and Ajna can move faster through the map thanks to having an actual dash now.

I never looked to Skullgirls as my point of comparison. I used the Prototype as my point of reference. Skullgirls is a fighting game where every character took 3 months to animate. I wasn't expecting that here.

Skullgirls had the benefit of being a complete game with a properly tooled engine and mechanics, and they were just funding the DLC work.. Indivisible still uses the Z-Engine, but everything needed to be retooled for the game, building a level editor, along with story writing and characters, basically starting from the ground up. Pretty sure Skullgirls initial budget was in the millions as well.
