i wish it was less of a simulation and more of a game
I liked it before it was announced for steam, now I think it's trash
It has been in desperate need of a UI overhaul for years.
it’s basically just rimworld right?
why? i'm playing it to this day and I think that it is still alive and kicking
well, it is... fucking true. Wish this game wasn't just a simulation. The first time I saw it, I got so hyped up that I wasn't even thinking what's actually going on in it.. But desu I've stayed playing it for a while anyways.
It's a great Simulation and but as a game it's a mess
Come on bro, I love it when games look so shitty and old, that they make you think about your previous life lol
Will the steam version have a decent UI?
yeah, it will. There are actually some pictures on steam. Check out the game's gallery
you need great autism and imagination to really have fun while playing it, a lot of stuff in all these DF stories is really exaggerated
it's not hard to learn how to play it and get a working fortress going, the hard part is finding something fun to make so you don't get bored
Is there any word on when the steam version is going to release?
i pray and wish that this game will have an update that will change everything and delete the existence of this game as a simulation
pcgamesn.com
not yet, at least that's what they say here
It looks like it just has a tile set, the UI appears to be the same
good fun up until the fps death hits
Looks really fun, tried it a few times but can't seem to get the hang of it. There's a lot of trial and error involved, and sometimes the wikis are complex. Maybe it's because I'm a brainlet.
I've never played it before, but I like it now that it has been announced for steam and is getting a decent UI. It'll be great!
death hits? you mean the moment when the game almost blueescreens your whole PC? lol
user, you are not a brainlet. You should have played it for a little bit longer instead of giving up. This game gets better as you reach a certain level of autism.
I mean, for me - the UI was OK. I just like the fucked up UI. It looks shitty, messy, but I am a nostalgic autist, so basically it feels like traveling in time.
For the most part DF's UI is unironically fine and completely usable besides a few bad screen like the military. It clearly tells you what keys to press for what and all the buildings, designations, and whatnot are grouped fairly well. Mouse support wouldn't help much either since now you're just clicking through multiple menus taking longer than just hitting a few keys.
I got to the point of having to train soliders, I understood how to grow food, makedrinks, beds ect ect. But I couldn't understand much else. I was using the lazynoobpack but apparently it's outdated now. Should I just learn the good old fashion way?
Nothing wrong with using lazynoobpack.
Well, if you've got food down, that's half the essentials. You knew how to set up rooms, right? You can make barracks and training halls in a way that isn't too different from bedrooms, then assign them to squads.
Also, did you figure out smelting ore and forging items? Because that's really important.
The only real problem with the UI is it's general inconsistency.
I agree with the mouse support part, I just wish Toady would add it so shitters could just shut up about it.
Yeah, except selecting all of one item like bolts, nevermind specific types of bolts, spread across 3 different stockpiles is much more difficult. Along with pretty much everything else.
But you can terraform and go up and down z levels. Personally i think the combat is great too, but its not much different from Rimworld. Mostly combat logs and rng. And the storybuilding has more depth and a bigger impact on the game itself.
Where Urist Mcmurderfuck can become a legend for slaying a forgotten beast and getting a neat title too.
While in Rimworld, colonist Engie can kill a faction leader and have a positive mood for a few hours and then nothing really happens except a new leader is elected for an enemy faction.
They technically belong to the same genre, but they do things differently. Rimworlds ease of use is great, but its lacking depth in some departments. Dwarf Fort has great depth, but the UI is very unfriendly and obtuse.
I thought it was outdated so It doesn't get the new content or something?
It was a few years ago, but yeah, I understood that melting particular ores would smelt into metals that you could use to make weapons, ect ect. I remember always trying to go for a super common mix.
The big step away from game to simulation was when seiges started having to move across the map, and thusly became incredibly rare.
>I thought it was outdated so It doesn't get the new content or something?
I don't think there has been a big content patch for a while now, what LNP version are you on? I might be wrong, I haven't played DF in a while
i think lnp is still being updated to this day, but not oficially... fans that are apart from the original creator are making/updating it
I never could get into fortress mode, but adventure mode was my bread and butter.
then I moved onto cataclysm DDA
no, fps death, as in when the game runs so slow that it takes hours for a dwarf to carry a single stone back to the stockpile
Most alloys are just for value or aesthetics, but the notable exception to that is Steel and Bronze. Steel is the second-best material in vanilla for edged weaponry, and tied with silver for best blunt. Bronze is better than iron for edged weaponry and armor, but is mostly only useful if you don't have access to iron.
If you're alloying you should always use ores over bars if possible, since not only does it conserve fuel and produce more faster, but it also guarantees more value from ores like Tetrahedrite that usually only have a chance of producing bars of one of their metals.
Steel requires you to first use flux and a bar of iron to make pig iron, then use a bar of iron, a bar of pig iron, and flux to make the steel itself. It's a bit more complex but it's definitely worth doing.
>When you successfully set up a proper steel industry for the first time
I miss goblinite, it's so fucking tiresome to find a good map with steel potential now. Fuck trading for iron scraps
Could I ask for a humble spoonfeed? When I check threads for it, they're in 2016/17.
Noted. I'll make sure I have another go soon. Also, what's the best way of finding out if someone is a Vampire or have some sort of mental problem you need to learn about?
shit bland unappealing game for management autists

I think this is it, not 100% sure tho. Last updated somewhere around January.
The absence of development in the UI system has held the game back from being a huge success, and probably will limit its steam release as well. There is no excuse for it, the game doesnt need to be all click based with a mouse, but its complexity is because of a lack of proper game development in relation to it rather than as a consequence of the game itself. They need to stop developing the game and think about how they can redesign the UI from scratch to make it more accommodating and easy to use.
Otherwise yeah, 10/10
I'm not sure if they ever fixed it but vampires will usually belong to half a million civilizations and groups, and also have jewelry made from bits of sentient creatures. It's a bit obvious.
Also, abnormally long lists of relations, as well as having dozens of skills at novice.
Oh, yeah, and the one dead giveaway is if their mood shows a severe need for drink despite alcohol being readily available.
I think focusing again in fortress mode instead of tweaking world gen for half a decade would do more good for the game, but maybe I'm just used to the UI by this point.
this photo is slightly better than the other meme one of this guy. He looks almost human here.
Honestly part of the appeal is how big the learning curve is, makes it more fun to play once you really get going. However the game really isn't that hard once you know the basics, sieges can be stopped with a drawbridge and caves can easily be managed. I'm not really a creative type so I can't make my own fun from it, maybe there are mods that make it harder. If the fun is all in losing but you can never lose once you're set up then there goes most of the fun.
you're alright, friend.
I'll give it a red hot go, thanks friend, you've reinvigorated my drive to play dwarf fort.
he looks like the twitch guy, asmongold
lol
A really really really cool game
It doesn't give me instant gratification though so I mostly play my bing bing wahoos instead
Enjoy, friendo. Remember not to be a pussy and wall yourself off entirely from the caverns.
You did reach the caverns, right? That's where the fun begins.
it was Yea Forums's go to for trolling newfags
and now Yea Forums feels the iron sting of it's cruel joke now that the fat faggot is putting in trans dwarves
any other opinion is objectively wrong
Good luck, user, have fun.
>pussying out and using a drawbridge
I bet you use massed cage traps too.
i think mods can do a really big role in this game, never checked if there are any but gonna do that now.
And yeah, the learning curve makes the game interesting. Almost like you'd have to actually do something else than grinding like people do in most of the games
damn didnt know it is hitting steam, they better not fuck it up! and they better have the original graffix, tilesets are optional dammit!
not r-really, just found a blind troll once from digging far down.
Gameplay is in the same place it was since 2012 except it's gotten worse and worse and worse. I can't recommend DF to anyone any longer.
I get you have to make it fun but I would appreciate if the devs would actually implement something like maybe enemies with ladders to climb walls or to blast them down. Can't be that hard to add in considering they can figure out that cats were dying from getting drunk off alcohol and fixed that.
oh fuck, that'd be actually great to get the original graphics as an option
Some enemies actually will climb now, but there's still nothing stopping you from walling yourself off entirely.
Pathfinding bro.
cage traps are the only way to capture enemies and monsters for your underground colloseum where you throw elven merchant caravans after stealing their shit to see how many waves of gobbos and Giant Panda's they can deal with.
...why not just play dwarf fortress? It's not a remake, it's just the current version with an official tileset.
So add in enemies that bring cannons, or maybe they bring pickaxes to break down walls. Can't be that hard to implement. I'm pretty sure there's a mod for that sort of thing though.
I already do, but I am also Gaben's fanboy and want it on Steam.
>still playing Draw Fortress when a much superior game will be released in early 2030
I like it but Toady's priorities are in weird places, the game keeps getting more and more bloated and unoptimized with who knows how much spaghetti code while features like military have been downgraded and things like economy have been completely shafted for a very long time, sometimes I love the game and how much complexity it has but it could be a lot better, I wonder if the steam release will actually get Toady off his ass once non-forumdads start to complain en mass
I think he needs to add some actual gameplay features. I know that he basically does what he wants and he now he's basically having a blast fucking around with worldgen and civs and such things but those things don't affect actual gameplay and fortress mode hasn't seen anything substantial for years now.
the single best game ever made
What is the best building material and why is it ___soap___?
it's the hardest to produce, and thus the most flex
Is this the guy of that Call of Duty photo? If so what does he think of the meme? I felt bad for him
There is a version of Dwarf Fortress Masterwork that was updated two months ago. That's pretty up-to-date, I think. MW is the largest modpack, with pretty good quality and many quality of life changes. It also adds the ability to play as other races, if you want.
I liked playing as Succubi. You don't really reproduce as Succubi, since Incubi are so rare, so your fort expands by using Succubi abilities to seduce other races to work for you instead.
My fort had humans living on the surface, ork mercenaries used as cannon fodder, and dwarves who lived in a traditional fort underground, all controlled by a noble class of haughty, immortal Succubi femdoms.
but masterwork removes different material types
how can people already have opinions on a game thats not even out yet? Is this thread one big LARP?
