All the Donkey Kong Country games besides 3 are fucking awesome. Donkey Kong '94 is a masterpiece too.
Glad you're enjoying it user. The series kinda gets overlooked these days since Nintendo has so many other 2.5D platformers but it's honestly their best one. Definitely check out DKC2 when you're done with it.
Welcome to a time when video games were about being fun. Not about being movies and political statements.
No they are not, it's a shit series. Fucking faggots.
Now, now, let him play through DKC3, too. It's not that bad.
OP, play the Donkey Kong Land games too. There's enough differences that they aren't just ports of the DKC games.
"Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good."
Fuck you. donkey kong country 3 is good too. Been slowly as fuck going through the "hard mode".
The battery will most likely die before I bother to get that 105%
What's wrong with DKC3 apart from the soundtrack?
I can make up quotes and attach a picture to them too.
Playing DKC 3 now. Is it just me or is it shit how every time you start to run your character has to do a forward-roll/cart-wheel?
Played it for the first time last month on the Snes mini. Twas great. Wish it had the sequels
"I can make up quotes and attach a picture to them too.'
i think its still good but the mechanics of the game compared to modern platformers feel pretty lacking. i replay super mario world frequently and it 'holds up' in terms of mario's speed and physics, but if i play dkc1 or 2 these days im thinking 'the tempo of this game feels slightly off from what i would prefer.' there's no doubting that in every other way the dkc series is great though, particularly its aeshetic (art style and soundtrack) is top notch for its time and still holds up no problem.
im not sure if i would call it style over substance, but i prefer the style of dkc and the substance of mario. the dkc returns series solved the mechanical tempo problems i had with the original series but it lost some of its unique art style charm from the snes era, but frankly it's not a huge loss.
>but i prefer the style of dkc and the substance of mario
but i prefer the style of dkc over the style of mario world, and the substance of mario world over the substance of dkc*
Dkc 1 and 2 are absolutely must play games. 3 is for fans that want more.
It's good right up until you start looking for all the secrets.
>just throw away a few dozen lives by jumping into random pits dude
It's in every dkc. If you want to cancel it by doing jump.
It's a masterpiece.
I'm only a millenial so i played it on my Gameboy Advance but it was a goddamn blast. Everything about the game is top tier quality
I think it took the level gimmicks a bit too far. A lot of them are just fucking annoying and slow the game down. Anything with Ellie, the river race, that reverse control section, the boss fight thats a snowball fight, etc.
It's the same problem I have with Crash 3 and Spyro 3. The traditional levels like the tree trunk ones and the cliffsides are pretty fun, but there's surprisingly few levels in the game that don't tack on some kind of one-off quirky gameplay mechanic.
The ususal complaints I've seen were the replacement of Diddy with Kiddy and the way gimmick levels were handled (including bosses). I believe a lot of people were just dissapointed that it wasn't way better then the second game, but you should form your own opinion
It's been this way since the first game, it can be annoying with precise jumps, but it's useful to get rid of enemies, or roll of a platform and jump afterwards to extend the range.
That sort of puts me off playing 1 and 2 to be honest. It's a shame because they seem like games I would love, but the control scheme is shit
Does Tropical Freeze have it?
It's really not that much of an issue, a standstill roll really helps when killing enemies that are about to fall onto you
Tropical Freeze = 2 > 1 > Returns = 3
It's actually sort of speedups to start a roll or whatever and jump. You can also start pressing Y mid jump which is very useful. Like if your gliding like an asshole you can start running as soon as you hit the ground.
I was born on 1988
Am I a zoomer or a boomer?
what does being a zoomer have to do with anything? Its not like theirs anything dated about the DKC games besides limited lives.
i remember being stuck on Snow Barrel Blast for hours when i was little because it was so hard to see
Best platforming series
I'm playing through DKCTF myself
I really really like DKCR and DKCTF but I feel they're inferior to DKC1 and 2, which are fucking masterpieces, specially if you consider they were release so long ago. The aesthetic is unrivaled by DKCR's cartoony look (however dope the silhouette levels look) and I vastly prefer the partnering mechanics of the originals, I feel they give you much more freedom compared to the newer ones where they're basically a hover upgrade. Piggybacking and throwing to discover secrets was dope, being able to fly with Dixie was dope. Also I feel there was more variety to how the secrets are found, like that level in DKC2 where you have to break open a chest to find a cannonball and carry it over to the cannon. And the bonus levels themselves obviously reached their peak in DKC2; tons of bonus rehashing in DKCR and TF.
The only thing DKCR and TF brought I wish was in the original is the time attack mode. I honestly don't follow all the anons saying the newer ones are as good or better than the originals. I guess they didn't play them when they released or something because to me, while the newer ones are great, the difference in quality is evident.
>Does Tropical Freeze have it?
No
First one I played was DKC3 on a hand-me-down SNES and I enjoyed it. Any particular reason why it's inferior to the others?
Just worse music and level design than its predecessors, it's a great game on its own
no miyamoto said that. Proves he went senile long ago
I wish my 10 year old cousin would play it too
>Does Tropical Freeze have it?
Kinda, there are two control schemes, analog stick and dpad. Analog stick walks when you press it a little, runs when you press it to the edge. Dpad the run button is mapped to X which is also the "grab" button which is not as annoying as rolling to run but it's still not optimal, specially in stages where you have to cling to walls/floors/ceilings. But I didn't have an issue with it in DKCTF or the originals so maybe stop being a bitch
I was born in the same year that this game released and I only properly played it last year, but it's one of my favorite games now. Am I a zoomer?
>Still posting that fake quote
The original DKC is one of the most zen games I've ever played. It's like meditation in video game form.
>that music in the K. Rool fight
*blocks your path*
What is terrible about it? It's super basic, sure, but it does nothing offensive to justify calling it terrible.
Basic? It's highly inventive.
When it comes to bait, it can't get any more obvious, post some music instead
