From my impression of French culture, it seems like part of it is deliberately crude and actually embraced alongside the romantic aspects, and it's been this way for a long time. Like to most of those beautiful things, there is a sort of sardonic take on them to the side as well, and it's an element which doesn't translate to the Japanese so they assume it only ever was the beautiful side and nothing else.
