DF is actually a very shallow game. It has a ton of complex behaviors but they do not connect to each other, they're like a bag of minigames that you learn separately.
Same for most complex realtism games like Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.

A good game must be designed with depth in mind. It's what the meme "emergent gameplay" means.
For example, Rimworld has better farming than DF, because you need to cover a large area and defend it. In DF, you can wall off your tiny farm and you're done.

Everyone has a sort of "novelty goggles" that make them overlook flaws when they're having fun.
As they stop having fun and git gud, those goggles slowly come off. You know you are gud at the game when you played 10+h, you're having only a tiny bit of fun, but have tons of complaints about everything.

So, DF became bad as soon the difficulty/complexity reached unnimaginable goals? You think it should have been more simple to begin with?

DF isn't difficult it just has many systems and an unintuitive control scheme

The real problems of DF aren't related to the UI, it's the shit like farming, AI, trading, being able to wall off everything.

I can get behind that. The interface is ass. I mean, the game itself is pretty much a work of art due to the amount of things that are possible in it, but it same way, it sure do look like a mess sometimes.
Hell, there were times when I just couldn't tell wtf was happening.

I like clearing the garden. My problem is the constant fights when you have more than a couple of animal types, as well as how grindy it gets later on.

The devs intended for you to have multiple gardens to avoid the fighting. I had different gardens for all kinds of shit ranging from a Farming stuff only garden, to a 90% water type garden and so on. It completely did away with any fighting. There's also fences as a quick solution. I can't comment on how grindy it got because I loved the game so much that time just flew by while playing it so I'm quite biased on that aspect.

I mostly feel the same, I'm just talking about how some of the later animals require multiple rare animals and seeds/fruits just to visit/become a resident. The mating requirements get pretty intense too.

Yes assuming you're doing the gardens on the same profile. I had a main garden that I constantly changed to complete the game and then my other gardens where I kept all of the content itself. So once I unlocked certain piñatas like the ones with water requirements, I'd build a new garden that they would visit right away once I built the requirements for having them instead of having to do the climb to the late game by unlocking previous pinatas. You could also unlock farming shit in your main garden and then go to another garden where you could buy them straight away from the trader instead of unlocking them again. Most of my time spent on the game was just doing thematic shit, I think the only pinata I ever bothered having consistently was the fox
