The only trouble with giving games as gifts is the gifter often gives someone something they personally like, something they think the recipient should play - instead of getting them what they actually want.
When I receive a game as a gift because someone bought me a game they know I really wanted, it's the best gift possible. It's wonderful. But I have had people who only give me games they like, which I have never shown interest in. I know they mean well, but sometimes they end up unplayed, or not completed, because I was never interested in them. And that can hurt or anger the gifter. It's just a bad situation, because nobody wants to pour hours and hours into something just because they feel obligated to out of politeness.

At christmas and my birthday my family always gives me random video games or video game merchandise. That's all they think I am. They think I'm just "the gamer" and have no interests outside of video games. There's no thought put into it. They think "he likes video games, let's just buy the latest game and whatever meme merchandise is all the rage".
The games I actually want, I can download for free. And I don't need more merchandise, that just becomes junk on a shelf or in my closet that I can't throw away because it'll upset them.
They don't really know who I am if this is all they think of me. If they have no interest in actually getting to know me, then they don't really care about me, so why even bother getting me a gift?
