Im going to pick this up tonight after having played 1 and 2 a while back so lets have a thread about this and some of the other less talked about srpgs out there too.

How are the characters in this one? I dont expect super deep, but disgaea 1 had a really charming cast.

None of the games have topped 1s characters.

5 is the best overall in the series. Characters are decent, but do have their repeated catchphrases. Story is pretty standard. OST is really good. And game mechanics are the best in the series.

I would recommend playing the Switch version for portable grindin, but the other versions are fine too.

I'll never not be mad seeing Seraphina get turbocukkd

Guess I shouldnt be clicking on spoilers, good to hear the mechanics are in top form though. Ive never played 3 or 4 since I heard they werent that good and I felt like I could skip the stories if that was the case. Also did gordon ever show up again even as a dlc character. His English VA in 1 seemed to be enjoying his job a lot when he spoke.
And yeah im grabbing the switcg version since I heard its a good port

The switch version is great. Visually it looks the same, runs the same, is portable, and has all the DLC characters.

Gordon does sorta show up in 2, along as DLC in 3. I love his English VA.

Oh yeah speaking of dlc characters, laharl is in right? How much eternal grindan before I get to use him?

At least in the Switch version, from what I remember the DLC characters are scaled depending on what chapter you are on. So I think if before completing the first chapter (if you level up a bit, and get some decent gear with some generic units) you could basically unlock the original trio right from the start if you wanted. You do have to do some battles to get them.

Characters are fine though D1 and D2 still had the better main cast in my opinion. Gameplay wise it's the best.

They are alright

That spoiler kind of bothered me too. Wish that Liezerota stayed dead instead of conveniently coming back to life in the ending so that Seraphina got her husbando. Oh well, Adell and Rozalin are still the best Disgaea OTP. Their combo attack in Disgaea 5 is cute as fuck.

ZAKYUUN~

Personally my favorite villains in the franchise, but I find the main cast to be kind of weak

When you get done with the tutorial or close to that, a female fighter lets you pick up the DCL. If you chose to receive some characters at that time they'll come at level 1.

Seraphina deserved a better game.

Is this series still playable even if I’m a turbo brainlet? I’m pretty shit at strategy games.

>Is this series still playable even if I’m a turbo brainlet?
Yes. The crazy shit doesn't come into play until endgame. And even then you have to purposely go out of your way to make your game like that.

Yes, this really isn't a real SRPG. The strategy boils down to
>Having bigger numbers
>Making sure you're at least not hitting the enemy with resisted elements
>Keeping equipment marginally up to date
It's a fun series though

>disgaea
>strategy
It's really more like the game hands you all the ingredients and says "here you go, now figure out how to break the game or get wrecked nerd"
It's less strategy and more building the perfect units to steamroll everything

I don't know if I'm supposed to like the lobby music in 5. It starts awesome, then I hear a drunk chink trying to sing, then the chorus is decent

I refuse to believe the vocals aren't horrible on purpose. Wish there as an option to switch to and instrumental version.

5 Introduces things slowly so it not too hard to pick up for beginners.

I call it t a time management game, You are doing it right and you finish everything up quickly or you can get mired in all the options, and it will take many times longer.

>pop main character into the map
>hit as many enemies as you can with one attack
>spawn a healer to heal him between turns

This beats 90% of the game

Is 5 an okay starting point? I can grab it for $5 right now
