I usually make my first Borderlands playthrough a solo one, so I'm not at all bothered about needing to pirate for the first 6 months until I can get my hands on a 3rd party key. I'm going to be playing as Robo Hobo with Canine Companion so at least i won't be too lonely.
My biggest issue is that it's been YEARS since i've pirated a game. I'm not even sure I fully remember but I'm pretty sure i just download the piratebay file onto qbittorrent and then cancel the seed afterwards.
