I don't know if you've browsed through the emulator scene lately but it's not as impressive as you make it sound. RPCS3 is making some major strides but it's still FAR away from being an actual PS3 replacement. The 360 emulator Xenia is basically dead at this point.

The only real emulator that is hitting it out of the park is Dolphin, they have that shit on phones now too, blew my mind.

RPCS3 can play a lot of the most popular ps3 exclusives at a good framerate with higher resolutions (demon souls, persona 5, skate 3 etc...)
It might not be a full replacement for the ps3 yet, but if you want to play one of the more well known exclusives, you're going to have a better experience on RPCS3 than an actual ps3.

nigger, try to buy a 1080p tv these days... When my last TV broke a few months ago I tried buying a 1080p TV and you know what happened? There are no 1080p TV anywhere unless you're willing to pay for some shitty brand like Polaroid, Sanyo or something. Not only 1080p is dead but buying TV's smaller than 40 inches is also pretty difficult too since only shitty unknown brands make smaller TV's, so I ended up buying a Samsung 40 inches, 4k TV with HDR for $280 to mostly watch 1080p content and I hate it, so from now on I'll only buy monitors. Monitors also have more accurate colors and faster response time anyway. They just lose on blacks to TV's because the use of IPS panels instead of VA. Although while VA panels have better blacks they do tend to have worse viewing angles and image response time.

PS3 emulation is actually one of the areas where Ryzen is more significantly behind Skylake+++ than others. Having cores is nice and all, but RPCS3 can benefit greatly from TSX, which AMD does not support. In addition to that the fact that there's increased latency when jumping between CCXs also hurts performance. Mainstream Intel CPUs are definitely the best for RPCS3 due to TSX, no inter-core latency fuckery and the fact that they can be pushed to ~5GHz.

Hopefully Ryzen 3000 will improve on things. Clocks should be higher right off the bat, there should be better IPC and inter-core latency hopefully won't be as much of an issue since it's going to have 8C per chiplet, though I still expect inter-chiplet latency to potentially be a bitch, though I don't think RPCS3 really benefits from 16C/32T, so it may just run very well on a single chiplet.

I've heard that the reason Xbone didn't go with wide-open disc BC emulation is that apparently MS thought that if they emulated an ALREADY SOLD ON DISC game for BC, that they would have to get the original publisher (who may not exist anymore) to specifically having the emulator run it. An ALREADY SOLD DISC.
I don't have any hope of disc BC aside from PS1, which has already had disc BC because PS2 and PS3 included all of its hardware, no emulator was needed. And due to the slow optical drives of the day and some games might depend on the timing, PC emulators work better when the disc has been fully ripped first anyhow.

No, you don't need permission to run the emulation from the disc. MS needs permission because they sell/let you download a digital copy for backward compatibility. The idea is that even if the disc is scratched to hell as long as the Xbox can figure out what the disc is supposed to be it will work. Also it's good for games that are rare and expensive so more people have access to them

Though some of the golden memories you see people talking about are from the old days when Sony I think was probably really trying to push and justify PS+, so they had TONS of top tier stuff flooding in all the time. For people who got in early they genuinely got a fuck load of great free shit.

In retrospect though that was probably advertising to some extent and not very sustainable. Nowadays there is a fair amount of shovelware, though still with occasionally solid titles every 2-3 months. I got GoW3 and MGS4 in the last little while for example free, wouldn't have bothered otherwise. GoW3 is kind of all over honestly but it's not shovelware either.

If they think they need to be able to put a random game from an old disc in some kind of online "shelf" first, then something is wrong. Either they aren't really emulating (have the publisher provide a .exe of the game re-compiled for Xbone, and use that with the disc assets) or it's part of some upper level manager's "strategy", which is just gay.

I've had PS Plus for around 4 years. The only games I've liked off PS Plus are Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Journey, Bloodborne(already had it), Tearaway Unfolded, Magicka 2, Ratchet and Clank(already had it), Abzu.

So SOMETHING needs to cover ongoing server costs. Of the options, subscription is my favorite because it is most on point and doesn't fuck with any games. No. It used emulation as well as a few chips even at launch. And that was in 2006, we've had quite a few process shrinks since then.
PS1 & PS2: these will be trivially software emulatable at this point if Sony has been serious about it.

PS4: this is just plain BC, the whole point of switching to standarized x86+GPGPU architecture was that going forward they can get backwards compat for free, just like on the PC. No more architecture changes, just more power/memory.

PS3: this will be the hardest one because the architecture was super, super fucking funky. Given the progress even fans have made on emulation (and they don't have full access like Sony of course does) I won't say emulation is impossible in $400 worth of 2020 BOM, but hard to say for sure.

However, the original cell was manufactured on a 90nm process. PS5 will probably be fabbed on TSMC's 7nm process, which isn't exactly relatable in density but probably around 50-60 times denser is reasonable. Original Cell was 14.5 mm2, shrunk by a factor of 50x+ though and integrating a whole one isn't out of the question, though I could see Sony releasing a "PS5+" (or pro or whatever model) for +$50 with PS3 BC as a reasonable option too.

I doubt you had an HDTV in the 80s or early 90s but that doesn't mean the tech wasn't there and it wasn't clearly the future. Or just making bad engineering decisions due to having to figure things out as you go along over years. PCSX2 is a great example, it's really fucking impressive what they managed to pull off overall. But it's also a pile of hacks with some fundamental bad architecture decisions that it's too hard to change now and everyone knows it. It works anyway due the sheer power that can be thrown at it, but it's not how even the devs would do it if they started over from scratch, even without full docs and specs and dev hardware. The PS2 wasn't more powerful then the Wii for example but Dolphin does much better then PCSX2.

I'm not trying to take a single thing away from the PS2 guys to be sure, they had to deal with reverse engineering a horribly baroque architecture and with worse tools then we have now. It's impressive. But it shouldn't be used as a benchmark either.

It's because they're legally bound guys, it's not technical. With the PS3 obviously Sony put their proverbial foot down and said "no region lock allowed period" right from the start, so all the contracts had that. But for the PS1 and PS2 Sony itself is still bound by whatever the licensing and contract schemes were at the time. Sony can certainly ASK devs to allow them to dump it, and can also say "if you say no, then you will not be supported". But devs in turn are free to say "nah", and Sony wants BC to be as wide as possible. Worse, lots of devs from that era have long since gone bankrupt and the IP rights are who knows where.

So it remains that the easiest legal thing to do is just support the region lock for those old games so that it's not even a question, any old disc will just play. It sucks and in an ideal world copyright would still be 14/28 years so a lot of old games would now be public domain and in another few years it wouldn't be an issue at all, hell Sony could include a SNES and Dreamcast support too (and Nintendo PS1 support and Microsoft all of the above). We live in a copyright maximalist world instead though.

8K is literally undistinguishable from 4K if you sit further from the screen than the half of the screen's diagonal (so for a 70 inch TV, you'd have to sit 3 feet from it to see any improvement of 8K over 4K). It is a marketing meme.

This marketing strategy has been in place since the Wii Virtual Console laid the groundwork. You've never been able to use games you already owned. You had to buy them again.

The reason is the games themselves have to be altered and recoded a bit so they'll work with the store and PS5 itself. Sony isn't going to do all that work and then just give it to you for free simple because you bought it before. No one has ever done that. It defeats the point of the whole concept - which is to make money.

Having support for 8k monitors as in being able to plug the console into an 8k tv without the upscaling becoming blurrier than it has to is good, but trying to run games with current standard graphical fidelity in native 8k at playable framerates is just not happening. The strongest console on the market really struggles with even 1/4th of the workload (at low-medium settings no less), and the hardware isn't even there on the pc side, at least in the consumer space. They're not shipping Pixar rendering stations here, these are consoles we're talking.

Future proofing in general has proven to be kind of dumb. You pay more than you have to, and by the time it's showing its age, raw power won't the issue. It'll be missing support for certain APIs, features and other rendering techniques making it outdated in other ways.
