the problem is that you are wrong about planescape. not only did it have okay combat, which torment does not, but also most its gameplay within the dialogue and then deducing what to do with the information gained and who to talk to. torment does not have either, and a really bad and easily cheeseable dialogue mechanic on top of very bad and pointless combat.
