The scene is barely alive. The upcoming KSL 3 is going to have a mere R16. There's way too few players now. So many are retired, or went to the military.
Check the old Titty Sambo tournaments, and they were these massive 64 player tournaments.
And now we got many players like Flash who are bound to go to the military soon, so that number will drop even more.
Can Starcraft competitive scene survive long term?
It's mandated by law. Everyone has to serve before 30. Korea is like Israel. Tiny little nation, so they need every person to serve at least a little bit.
Kayden Reed
KSL was always r16...
Ian Young
>don't think so, rts is dead even in korea
The streaming scene seems healthy. Even on youtube Flash commands an average of like 30k views per vid. That's pretty healthy considering he pumps out like 5 a day.
Grayson Johnson
Doesn't matter. It means they knew they couldn't get enough players. The ASL is only R24.
Remember, in the heyday they were doing 64 man tournaments.
Nathaniel Foster
>so they need every person to serve at least a little bit You mean they need 50% to serve at least a little bit
Aaron Thompson
Have sex.
Connor Walker
are you talking about SC2 or brood war. Cause competitive SC2 was killed by blizzard few years ago already
Liam Diaz
Like, right now? Why?
James Peterson
rip sc, you had a good run
Christian Reyes
Will attempt to. Thanks for your support
Owen James
What would Tasteless do without a cushy job that lets him sleep in all day?
Elijah Hill
You know they only have to stay in the military for a year right.
Blake Hernandez
He seems like the sort that'd never leave his first restaurant job.
Connor Moore
Video game shoutcasters tarted up in suits truly are the most pathetic of things. These people are ruining a once kino scene with their normie pandering, broadcast tv style format and sponsorship canvasing.
WC3 reforged is going to supplant SC2 anyway. It's always been a much more interesting game to watch and play.
Luke King
>He seems like the sort that'd never leave his first restaurant job.
true, warcraft3 is much better to watch than fucking starcraft
John Taylor
I agree to an extent. Tastosis are still the best, but I have noticed a big change in tasteless' style, and it's pretty lame. Old tasteless was much more entertaining. Now he's trying to hard and constantly getting calls wrong.
Easton Nguyen
Thank God for Starcraft.
Justin Fisher
everything had to end some time. just enjoy it while it lasts.
every country should do this t.bh
Ethan Phillips
He literally dropped out of uni for starcraft. He was gonna get a phil degree and go to law school.
Luis Clark
Israel has conscription for women, though.
Lucas Bennett
So was I man. So was I.
Ethan Gray
i wish military was a mandatory thing or at least boot camp. gets fatties in shape, discipline, unit cohesion, and learn some valuable skills like fucking cleaning.
Easton Watson
this this this
Mason White
oh yeah mandatory military service is so good >in army for a year >do fuck all and eat trash food >"thanks champ, if the war comes youre the first one to die"
John Sanchez
>if the war comes youre the first one to die >POG
Joseph Barnes
what?
Liam Martin
it means anyone not a grunt. you think if you're working in administration tat you would be picking up a rifle and being in the front lines? lol
Nathan Walker
t. never served Those lessons are squandered on all but the few who have intrinsic motivation to begin with once they leave the military.
Nolan Torres
what lessons do you learn shitposting in front of a computer screen eating pizza rolls for a year
Aiden Bailey
There are so many good players that can't get into ASL/KSL, players that would have paved a fucking road through the trash that was the old MSL/OSL starleagues. It's far tighter than it used to be. Personally I think they could open it up but they want to keep it short so whatever. Just because we don't have an extra round of trash players to weed out doesn't mean the scene is dead
Jayden Murphy
t. shitbag
Brandon Allen
When confronted with the truth, you can only lash out, huh?
Benjamin Anderson
I think the scene could keep going if they did events that weren't necessarily grand-championships or stadium events.
Broodwar needs something equivalent to Rookie / College / Olympic leagues that feature a spread of various levels and nations.
Not just all korea all gosu all the time. I mean it's cool but, there needs to be variety for variety's sake.
Jonathan Anderson
The problem is westerners will never be as koreans, and it means any foreigner tournament you hold is ultimately second rate because you're not competing at the height of your field
>WC3 reforged is going to supplant SC2 anyway. It's always been a much more interesting game to watch and play hahahahahaha This wasn't true in the 00's and there's no way it'll be true now
Cooper Campbell
Thank you for making me laugh.
is it confirmed that Rapid's gay or is it just gaydar?
Luis Moore
Conscription: Everybody's welcome
Ryder Clark
>and it means any foreigner tournament you hold is ultimately second rate
Let me copy-pasta from my post since you obviously didn't really read it, and were just waiting to hear yourself talk.
>Broodwar needs...leagues that feature a spread of various levels and nations >Not just all korea all gosu all the time. >I mean it's cool but, there needs to be variety for variety's sake. >I think the scene could keep going if they did events that weren't necessarily grand-championships or stadium events
Gabriel Allen
the military doesn't teach you some magic secret you can't learn in the outside world or that you never forget, it teaches you basic responsibility and how to be a functioning and competent part of a larger team, something a lot of people will straight lose as soon as they're put back into regular society.
Benjamin Smith
Blizzards dismantling of KeSPA is what ultimately destroyed Brood War. It just lived on anyway because of how fucking amazing the game is despite all the horse shit the competitive scene had to endure. Anyone with an ear to the ground in Brood War knows Flash wasn't in KSL because he knows this also. Hell, all the pro players know it. Blizzard accidentally made the best RTS game of all time and thought they did it on purpose. So they made SC2 with a competitive angle and fucked up everything. People forget in early SC2 there wasn't even any LAN function. Fucking Blizzard stinks and they need to get their fucking noses out of Brood War so it can prosper again. But the scene is so royally screwed their pittance tournament doesn't make up for the egregious failure of esports in Korea. If Proleague were to ever get another real push, Brood War would be back on top again.
Eli Howard
saved reminder i fingered rapid in a nightclub
I read it fully those events go on all the time, with very little interest or viewership because they're not played at the highest level. There's half a dozen foreigner leagues going on advertised on TL and nobody watches them, because people don't want to see amateurs play
The qualifiers were literally 10 hours long with more than 100 entrants you fucking mong.
Leo White
They had two rounds of qualifiers, like 1000 people got rounded down to 250 + pros of which 12 qualified
Ethan Butler
What happened to /sc2/ on /vg/? They were the absolute peak of shitposting and literally invented words like 'bait'. Now they don't even have a thread.
Colton Powell
That's what happens to those kinds of threads.
Colton Smith
No general thread on Yea Forums has even gone through the hardships, shitposters, faggots, mods, and bullshit that /sc2/ went there I was there for almost all of it
when i last saw it, it was one or two men roleplaying with each other and i dont really mean "uguu succ my dicky daddy" RP like all the other generals, i mean spouting unintelligible gibberish of script form writing about something sci-fi related that im not sure was even starcraft, punctuated with random words and sentences and a couple death threats to some korean player
Andrew Ramirez
memed too hard
literally shitposting general, the threads werent even about sc2
Michael Moore
Seen one seen em all, it's not a good long term strategy.
Chase Garcia
The last few threads I remember seeing were just shitposters spamming gook and making fun of the janitor
The threads didnt even have a proper general title format like all the other generals.
Thomas King
because best korea
Jaxon Hall
This user speaks the truth. The old guard are so far and above everyone else that other players have a hard time getting in, factor in tournament organizers wanting to keep stuff short to not over blow expenses and well, here we are. It's always a big deal whenever an amateur gets into ASL, regardless of whether they get bodied or not. When the time comes, there will be a new wave of players, and depending on Broodwar's growth, we might even see bigger tournaments.
As it stands right now, Broodwar isn't profitable, although it is rising slowly, it still has quite a ways before it reaches it's prime again. Afreeca have stated in the past that it's tournaments are hosted at a deficit, and that they end up making their money back through donations to streamers. To them, it's all about giving players a platform to play and grow, which is pretty admirable of them. KSL will undoubtedly go away once Blizzard decides it isn't making them any money.
Robert Adams
when was the last time a new pro player joined the pool?
Carson Russell
How am I supposed to do that?
Luis Williams
I'm honestly amazed they even sponsored a 3rd season, it was announced right after the wave of cuts to esports and other non-essential staff at blizzard. You think Brood War would be the first thing to be chopped. Somebody up there likes it, I guess. After season 2 everybody thought its time was up because it never got huge viewers.
Dominic Wright
Loads, we get 2-3 new players qualifying with each new tournament. JyJ, Byul, Zelot, Sacsri are all new players. They got manhandled in the first round but at least they qualified.
Zachary Barnes
Would you be excited for a SC3 announcement?
Isaiah Ward
I'd be happy for Artosis' job security but that's it.
They're well known, at least among blizz games, to get casting jobs probably forever. Nick has that laid back frat boy attitude, you could prboably get him casting real sports no problem.
Adrian Adams
I mean what did people think was expected when you are literally playing a 20 year old game.
>SC2 was a boring failure >Blizzard never really supported the E-Sports scene properly >Blizzard never balanced SC2 properly >People insisted of keeping the skill system high to prevent casuals
You know why Soccor is so popular? Because any third world monkey with a ball and 5 other players can play a game.
E-Sports will never be serious
Jason Roberts
>WC3 reforged is going to supplant SC2 anyway nobody will play it seriously outside china. Only normies will buy it for muh nostalgia 3 months after release it will have player base as big as wc3 has now. Just look at starcraft remastered. It actually made the game much more accessible with ladder and fast game, yet few people returned. And warcraft is already pretty accessible. Even graphics are alright. If people wanted to play it they would now. Also, blizz fired most cybersport staff and barely supports starcraft. It will not support wc3 cybersport.
zerg and protoss's multiple tools to instakill an army. Funny fact: protoss players have half apm of other race players of similar rank (not talking gm of course)
Tyler Walker

Matthew Walker
Easily one of the cringest things on this website And this shithole is filled with pedos everywhere
Jordan White
mate literally nobody played WC3
Cooper Walker
How would you save SC2 if you became Blizzard's CEO?
Easton Flores
the trade-offs are that ZvZ makes you want to die and that PvP is fucking awful.
Terran is the micro race, of course it has higher mechanical demand than Zerg or Protoss.
Jaxon Brooks
>Terran is the micro race, of course it has higher mechanical demand than Zerg or Protoss. This essentially is the thing wrong with starcraft. If race X is as strong as race Y but requires twice the effort and skill, the races are not balanced.
Elijah Carter
Sure the Korean scene is declining, but /ourguy/ Serral has caused a US/EU revival.
>/ourretard/ didn’t make it I miss leta already bros...
Cameron Cox
Imagine tastosis being forced to cast OWL, would blizz step in to stop the routine roasting of the shit game mechanics?
Benjamin Gomez
Conscription. My country has it too, served before 2010.
Blake Scott
Doesn't necessarily do any of that since fatties can just be fat and they get assigned to paper-pushing duties after the first two months. What it does teach is nationalism which is a good thing.
Kayden Bailey
Could be worse, could be shartifart.
Levi Anderson
feck off m8, we need combat robots that will replace the military entirely. people shan't suffer.
Anthony Gutierrez
Something has to be alive first before it can be barely alive

Problem is that BW skill already peaked in the past, so there's not much to look forward to. Nobody will ever be as good as Flash was in his prime again, including Flash himself since his wrists are fucked. There's not enough of a scene left for a new player to bust that level either.
Hell not just Flash, but so many other top players are just having their wrists and nerves torn to shreds. Whenever you see Jaedong do something that old Jaedong would never mess up, you can't help but wonder if it's him getting dull, or if it's just that his wrists really, really fucking hurt. We'll never get another Zerg as good at ZvZ as JD was in his prime.
tl;dr BW skillpeaked a little bit before SC2's release and now it's just old players whose bodies are slowly breaking down
>Problem is that BW skill already peaked in the past Yeah nah, you have no idea what you're talking about. Players now are way better than in the past, by an enormous margin, according to Flash and Jaedong. Flash claimed if he was as good in the past as he is now, he'd literally have never lost a game. The average level of play is significantly higher now.
Evan Moore
This. An ASL player that got knocked out in ro24 would've been maybe the 2nd best player of their race if they time traveled back to 2008
Justin Russell
He's right though. Women could easily serve in artillery or logistics (that kind of logistics that's far from front).
Jordan Wright
>the hardest to learn game has the most rapid dying scene Not surprised, people aren't interested in it and people don't want to learn the game either. Better to mindlessly watch Dota, League and CSGO tournaments.
Jacob Cruz
How much of that is them having an improved toolkit/metagame understanding vs the more audience-impressive things like snap-decision making and micro, though?
I don't know enough except as a dumb spectator believing what my lying eyes tell me, maybe it's just that everyone has gotten so good that nobody looks as impressive as they did in the past compared to each other, but when are we gonna get that kind of comparative dominance again? When are we gonna get another player who can get 80% in ZvZ? Someone like Bisu who can use his APM to regularly do things others of his race just can't do?
I know some people are bitching that Chess has gotten too boring because the players have so much of the openings/endgame committed to being muscle memory and that leads to draws. Obviously BW games don't draw, but something's missing that made me love watching it from 2004-2009. Do players just not care as much about the televised matches anymore compared to how much they make in smaller Korean sponsored matches/streams? Did I just not notice the bad play as much back then? I don't know, I wish I didn't feel this way. I want some unknown phenom to come slay the scene and dominate for years again, preferably with Z or P this time, and look godlike again.
Aaron Gray
>When are we gonna get another player who can get 80% in ZvZ? Someone like Bisu who can use his APM to regularly do things others of his race just can't do?
Never, because the average level of play is simply so high that isn't possible anymore. That's only possible when one person is playing the game correctly while everyone else isn't. And it isn't boring. Effort eliminated Flash with fucking 2 base proxy hatch Nydus Defiler a while back, the fact that players are so good has simply turned the meta completely on its head and we see weird shit like NaDa with his 5 rax nuke rush which is actually good, just really hard to pull off.
Then there's that mad lad Leta just doing whatever the fuck.
I always thought the main purpose of ASL right now was basically to provide story lines and drama for the streamers, because without some kind of big tournament to work towards, watching pros would probably get boring.
Countries with no mandatory mil srrvice tend to be easy to corrupt with communist ideas.
Joseph Perry
>every country should do this t.bh it was a complete waste of time. While I now know how to shoot, how to throw greanades and how to make a bed, I didn't really benefit from this in any way.
D.va is not a starcraft pro anymore. Blizzard thought it wasn't inclusive enough, as starcraft is too difficult. So, since she is a woman, she is best in every cyber sport now
Andrew Nelson
The weird retconning of overwatch lore is so bizzare. “No we never said dva was a starcraft pro” “but you guys literally announced her character by inserting her into the sc2 leaderboards” “I don’t know what you’re talking about”
Dylan Powell
Blizzard seems to have forgotten that their are a video game company and not a social justice NGO.
Isaiah Morales
You're delusional. ASL just had a huge finish and GSL is having finals in a week. The scene is way more alive than it was in heart of the swarm era.
Nolan Reyes
>Obviously BW games don't draw, but something's missing that made me love watching it from 2004-2009. You miss the storylines. The rise and fall of bonjwas, the player and team rivalries, the unlikely proleague snipes by matchup specialists, the ceremonies, the massive winstreaks, players having nicknames for their achievements, etc that were only possible because the level of play was so uneven. Try to think back to your average TvT in Proleague. Back in BW's peak, it was almost always painful to watch if it didn't involve someone like Flash or Fantasy or sometimes Light.
