those servers are basically just as bad as Yea Forums but with strict rules

I think it's okay for hobbies, you just have to avoid the off-topic sections. The layout of Discord in general encourages meme spamming but I've found a few good places that can stay on topic. My real main gripe with the program is that it feels like an awkward compromise between traditional chatrooms and more permanent places like forums; It sucks at being a chatroom though because everything you write is permanent, and sucks at being a forum because all your posts will fall off immediately unless you ask a mod to pin it to some locked server. This means mods are ironically more powerful on Discord than on traditional forums, and it's the main reason why I hate to see this wipe out forums since it is seriously a straight downgrade for this reason. It's like everything is getting Twitterized: Only what is currently happening matters, long-form posts are discouraged, and the balance of power shifts more and more into the hands of a few.
